ESSENTIAL

LEARNING

OUTCOMES

What will the students know or be able to do at the end of the lesson?

ASSESSMENT

How will the students demonstrate that they have accomplished the desired outcome?

STRATEGIES

In what activities will the students be engaged to accomplish the desired outcome?

Student will be able explain the behavior of gases using Boyle’s law and Gay-Lussac’s Law.

Students will have to determine the relationship between the pressure and volume of a confined gas

Students will place a small amount of water inside of a clean soda can and set the can on top of a hot plate. Heat the small volume of water up so that it boils producing a lot of steam.

1.  What happens when air in the bottle is heated?

2.  Describe the imploding effect.

3.  Explain your experiment.

Students will be able to explain on the molecular level the process of heat transfer and molecular motion that causes a solid to melt to form a liquid.

Students will see and discuss an animation of ice melting and compare the state changes of water to the state changes of other substances.

Students will also be able to explain how the arrangement of water molecules is different from most other substances when it changes state from a solid to a liquid. video online.

1.  Where do you think the energy came from to melt the ice?

2.  What do you think happened to the speed of the molecules in the ice when it was heated?

3.  How did the motion and arrangement of the water molecules change as the ice
