Rhythm Studies 1

Assignment #8

Study and practice the additive rhythm presented in class (3 - 3 - 2) and the five variations also presented. You can see them written out in the file additive.jpg on the website.

Write out every combination of 2 variations played simultaneously, as we did for the first three variations in class. Make sure to align each rhythm vertically, and below write and label the resultant rhythm. There should be fifteen combinations of two rhythms.

Learn to play each combination by working with a partner, one to each rhythm, and try to hear the resultant rhythms while playing them. Be prepared to demonstrate any given combination in class. Use a metronome to keep steady “ticks” as you play, and use your foot to mark the beginning of each cycle as we did in class. If your metronome has this feature, accent the first beat of every 8 (the rhythm is 8 ticks/beats long) to align with your foot.

Due at the beginning of class on Tuesday November 20th.
