THE CHIMES // Photo Editor

Basic function and responsibility:  

The Chimes photo editors (one web, one print) are responsible for delegating photography assignments to staff photographers, as well as personally shooting assignments. In addition to supervising the photography staff, these people give general expertise on visuals for the website or the newspaper. The ideal candidate is an experienced photographer with good management skills and a strong work ethic.

Duties:

  1. Ensure that all photographs used for the Chimes are of professional quality and reflect the professional standards of the news operation. Set a bold vision and strategy, leading photographers toward continual improvement.

  1. Supervise the photography staff and delegate photography assignments as needed. Conduct weekly meetings with photography staff. Serve as a mentor to photographers.

  1. Personally complete photography assignments when necessary.

  1. Edit and format photographs for layout placement using PhotoShop, Lightroom and InDesign (print photo editor).

  1. Upload photos online to create photo galleries and photo journals on a daily basis (online photo editor).

  1. Design an organizational workflow that encourages communication between photographers and web editors, as well as design editors.

  1. Organize and maintain a photo archive for future use.

  1. Ensure that photographic supplies are stocked and in working order, and maintain any equipment owned by The Chimes.

  1. Attend weekly budget meetings.

  1. Train an apprentice in spring for 10+ hours a week..

Supervision received: Editor-in-Chief, Managing Editor

Supervision of others: Staff Photographers, freelance photographers

Qualifications:

General: Demonstrate a working knowledge and familiarity with AP style. Strong editing and  shooting skills. Handy with a camera. Ability to supervise and provide constructive criticism in a helpful and appropriate manner. Flexible attitude. Demonstrate working knowledge of computer programs such as Indesign, Photoshop, Lightroom and Illustrator. Good interpersonal skills and ability to lead a photo staff. Able to delegate assignments.

Education and experiences: At the time of election or appointment, must attend or accepted to Biola as a full-time student. Prior experience working with newspapers, yearbook, magazines or prior work, class experience, or journalism is preferable.
