This list began in May 2009 when the question of whether anyone was keeping track of news library layoffs came up on the newslib listserv (a discussion forum that we remaining news librarians and many former news librarians still use to communicate with each other). None of us knew of anyone who was keeping track at the time, so I started this list. The list is based on self-reported data and isn’t a comprehensive accounting of the changes that have happened in news libraries since 2009, but as far as I know, it's the only accounting.

Note: Positions are counted as a whole number whether they are/were full-time or part-time.
