This Race
On the line and ready to go,
runners on your mark,
get set, bang-
the one mile race is off.
Companions and rivals,
ahead and behind,
waiting their chance
to move up in line.
Gaps now present;
we’re spaced out.
Halfway done, an
encouraging shout.
One lap to go,
pick up the pace-
we must run fast,
and finish this race!
Down the last stretch,
a runner ahead
sprinting to catch her,
but the finish is here.
Almost caught her,
but not quite,
no hard feelings-
it’s alright.
In the chute
while breathing hard,
we say well done,
glad our race is run.
We’ll run again on other days,
working training,
it’s a phase.
Even if we meet our goal,
Running with our friends
is the best reward.
