Children’s String Ensemble Spring Classes

starting January 27th!!

12 week classes (January 27 through May 5*) geared for children ages 8 and up who play violin, viola, cello or mandolin.  Taught by Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, classes will be held on Sundays at 146A South Street in Jamaica Plain at A Far Cry’s rehearsal space.  Classes will focus on building repertoire, learning group jamming and arranging skills in a Celtic and American fiddle music setting.  Common Celtic, bluegrass and old time fiddle repertoire will be taught by ear (although sheet music will be available if requested) and we will learn how to jam in a group setting, develop an authentic fiddling sound and arrange fiddle tunes for an end of semester group recital for friends and family.

Beginner-Intermediate Class (Sundays 1:00-2:00 pm) is for musicians who have been playing at least one year, and who may be new to fiddling and learning by ear.  Students will learn fiddling techniques, new tunes, and learn with fun games involving interpreting music through movement, listening and free improvisation.

Advanced Class (Sundays 2:00-3:00 pm) is for musicians who have played 3 or more years. No experience with fiddling necessary, but we will learn at a faster pace and will focus on developing a feel for the different fiddling styles. We learn new tunes, work on group playing skills, and do fun games centered around improvisation and call and response.
