Gagne’s 9 Events of Instruction
Lesson Overview: Students will be learning how to add single digit numbers using manipulatives.
1.Gain Attention: Show students a bag of goldfish snacks. Each bag should have between 5 and 10 goldfish and two different flavors, regular and pretzel. To gain attention have the students guess how many goldfish they think are in the bag and share with an elbow partner.
2.Establish purpose: Inform students that within the lesson we will be learning how to add two numbers together. We will also be learning how to write an addition statement to figure our how many goldfish snacks each of us has.
3.Stimulate recall of prior learning: Ask the students what it means to add two numbers together. Also recall prior vocabulary, such as add, plus, equal and sum.
4.Present content: On an overhead transparency spill out your goldfish and show students the hand out that they will be completing at their desks. Have students separate the two different flavors of fish.
5.Guided learning: (On the transparency, students should not be doing this individually yet) First show the students how to count the regular goldfish and where to write down the number, then have students count the pretzel goldfish and write down that statement. Have the students then add both the pretzel and regular goldfish and write down their answer next to the equal sign. As the teacher, read the statement out loud. _ pretzel fish plus _ regular gold fish equals _ .
6.Elicit performance: Change the number of fish on the overhead and have students write out number sentences at their seats. While they do this verbalize the procedure to help students remember the process.
7.Provide feedback: While students are completing the 2 different number problems walk around the classroom and make sure that students are comprehending the lesson and objective. Provide assistance to those that need it and acknowledge those that understand.
8.Assess performance: As the summative assessment students will be completing the hand out on their own and actually now counting their own goldfish in the bag. Independently they should separate the two flavors of gold fish. Record how much of each flavor there is and add the two flavors together to get the sum. When complete they should raise their hand and I will assess their work. After their work is assessed they can eat the goldfish.
Beginning (1) | Developed (2) | Accomplished (3) | |
Counting | Number of goldfish does not match the number written on the paper. | Number of goldfish is correct for each flavor but is not written in the correct spot | Number of goldfish is correct for each flavor is written accurately. |
Adding | Sum is not correct and is not written in the correct spot | Sum is correct but written in the wrong spot | Sum is correct and written in the correct spot. |
Verbalizing | Student does not read the statement clearly or accurately | Students reads statement accuratly but does not use vocabulary | Students reads the number statement correctly using vocabulary |
9.Enhance retention: Inform students that counting and adding is important because we find out how much there is of something. Give students a challenge to count things both at school and at home whenever they get a chance.
