We can count countable nouns:

a carrot/two carrots

an apple/three apples

We can´t count countable nouns:

                                 rice

water

We can use a/an with singular countable  nouns:

a biscuit

                             an egg

We can´t use a/an with uncountable nouns:

a bread (incorrect)

                     bread (correct)
