Atticus-Scout and Jem’s Father

Intolerance

1) Atticus did not tolerate Jem and Scout making fun of others, and causing trouble for other.

( Chapter 5 Page 54 & 55: “I’m* going to tell you something and tell you one time: stop tormenting that man.” )

- Atticus requesting Jem to apologise and make up for his mistakes.

( Chapter 6 Page 110 & 111, “ To do something like this to a sick old lady is inexcusable. I strongly advise you to go down and have a talk with Mrs Dubose.” )

2) Atticus did not tolerate his children being disrespectful towards their seniors and relatives.

( Chapter 14 Page 140: “I* said, ‘I didn’t ask you**!’... He was on his feet. ‘Apologise to your aunt,’ he said... Atticus turned his head and pinned me to the wall with his good eye. His voice was deadly: ‘First, apologise to your aunt.” )

3) Atticus did not tolerate Scout going around fighting people because of him

( Chapter 9 Page 91: “I* ran to Atticus for comfort, but he said i had it coming.”)

Tolerance

1) Atticus tolerated the insults from Bob Ewell.

( Chapter 23 Page 223: “Atticus was leaving the post when Mr Ewell approached him, cursed him, spat on him and threatened to kill him....Atticus didn’t bat an eye, just took out his hankerchief and wiped his face and stood there and let Mr Ewell call him names.”)

2) Atticus tolerated people talking behind his back when he helped Tom Robinson.

(Chapter 10 Page 106: “She’s* an old lady and she’s ill. You**just hold your head high and be a gentleman. Whatever she says to you, it’s your job not to let her make you mad.”)

Conclusion

[Even though Atticus were intolerant at time, it is for his children’s own good, as he wanted them to be respectful and well behaved children. Also, he is really tolerant, bearing all the insults everyone said about him, and compromising to almost everything. ]
