Ancient History
Course Outline
Dear Students and Parents,
Welcome to a brand new school year. This outline describes the goals and expectations for the upcoming year. I hope we can have a fun and productive year together as we explore the history of the ancient world. I will be happy to answer any questions or concerns that you may have at any time. Listed above are several ways to contact me. Email works best, but you can visit my blog or website for up to date information on what is happening in class. Here are the basic goals for the school year:
Class Description:
In this class, we will trace the history of civilization from the earliest hominids to the fall of the Roman Empire. We will analyze the development of the people, ideas, government, and technology that shaped the ancient world. We will use a variety of group learning activities and whole class instruction to achieve this goal. Technology and its proper application will be a central theme in this classroom. Not only will I be using technology on a daily basis, but so will the students. It is not necessary to have a computer at home, although it helps. The school has a computer lab, and when available, we will use it to accomplish much of what needs to be done. The class Blog will provide information about what is happening on a daily basis in our classroom and the school. Please check it often. The Wiki will be a useful tool for the students to find information that I have posted for class including websites, videos, documents, copies of activity sheet, and review sheets. The students will be given access to contribute to the Wiki as well.
Expectations:
-What I should expect from you…
*On time for class
*Bring all necessary materials to class every day
books, notebooks, pencils and pens
*Be respectful of everyone in the classroom
*All work should be completed to the best of your ability each day
*Binders should be organized and up to date
*To make a concerted effort to use technology effectively
-What you should expect from me…
*To be well prepared each and every day
*To challenge you
*To be respectful of every student
*To be fair and give each student an equal opportunity to learn
Classroom rules:
I like a disciplined orderly class. I assume that everyone is here to learn. All students should take responsibility for their actions and encourage the same from their fellow students. Please have respect for everyone and everything in the classroom. If you do this, you will have an opportunity to realize your potential as a student and a citizen. Think about your actions carefully!!! Rules will be consistent with those outlined in the Wing School student handbook. We will also be developing a set of 7th grade rules for all students to follow in all classes.
Assessments:
-Assessments will come in many forms: worksheets, group projects, discussions, computer lab activities, debates, presentations and tests.
-You will also be required to keep a binder with all of your social studies material neatly organized inside. We will discuss in class how these binders should be kept.
-Homework will be assigned on a daily basis consistent with the 7th grade homework policies. Late homework will be accepted for a loss of credit on the assignment.
Grading:
Test and quizzes: 40%
Homework: 20%
Notebook checks: 10%
Other assessments: 30%
PLEASE PUT THIS OUTLINE AT THE FRONT OF YOUR HISTORY BINDER!!!!!!!!!!
