I would like to thank everyone for coming today to see where we are as a state compared to the national average of our eighth grade students in reading. As you can see in the past we exceeded the national average, but lately we have fallen below the average. This is unacceptable and needs to be addressed so we can be back on top. We have looked at the programs there were in effect back from 1998-2002 and they seemed to be successful. As the director of the Reading Program we are going back to the basics and bringing back what is needed to help these students achieve. Even though are scores are below the national average I can assure you that we are doing everything we can to get the scores back up to par. It looks like that we are struggling, but as a parent I have little concern. Our teachers are more qualified and are meeting the requirements of every student to help them achieve the level that is required. The money that we have for this program is still in effect and we are utilizing all of our options for it. Your tax dollars are going to help our students, not only improve their reading scores, but all of the subjects. We have implemented a new reading program and it seems to be staying about the same progress. I would like to thank everyone for your support and continued support as we are making our students better readers in the classroom and for them to take what they have learned here for out in the world.
