What is the difference between a narrator and an author?
-narrator tells the story.
-author is the person writing the story.
What is the point of view?
-vantage point from which a writer narrates, or tells a story.
-note: the terms point of view a narrator can be used interchangeably.
Major Point of View
What are the three major points of view?
-first-person
-third person omniscient
-third person limited
First Person
-point of view (narrator)
the narrator is a character in the story, using the first-person pronoun.
-readers see and hear what the narrator sees and hears.

Does she always know what is going on?
Does she always tell the truth?
Third-Person Omniscient
point of view:
the narrator plays no part in the story. But can tell us what all the characters are thinking and feeling, as well as what happens in the past and future.
-think of “Once upon a time.
Narrator is an all-knowing god-like or Santa Claus-ish figure.
Third-Person Limited
Point of view: the narrator, who plays no part in the story, zooms in on the thoughts and feelings of one character.
readers only know the thoughts and feelings of one character.
think of a shadow or a little narrator on the character’s shoulder.
Voice
-The writer or speakers distinctive use of language in a text
-voice=diction [word choice] + language + tone
-voice helps to identify the author from reading just a passage or two
-example:
whose voice is this?
-For aught that I could ever read,
could ever hear by tale or history, the course of true love never did run smooth.

the attitude a writer takes toward a subject, character, or the reader
