Imagery def: Language that appeals to the five sense

Purpose of imagery: To express a specific mood or feeling

5 sense: taste,touch,sight, hearing,and smell

Figurative Language def: Word or phrase that describes one thing in terms of another and is not meant to be understood on a literal level

One example of figurative language is called a figure of speech

Many types of figurative language exist but main focus on: simile, metaphor,personification,, a few more in the sound section of the unit

 Simile examples: love is like a blossom

The teacher was as wise as an owl

Metaphor def: Figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things without using a connective word such as like, as, then, or resembles.

Main types: Direct, implied and extended

Direct Metaphors Def: a metaphor that says something is

For example:

Some say love it is a hunger

an endless aching need

I say love it is a flower

and you it’s only seed

Implied Metaphors def: a less direct metaphor which is often used in conversation

Extended Metaphors def: a metaphor that is developed over several lines of a poem

Personification Def: a kind of metaphor in which a nonhuman thing or quality is talked about as if it were human

Sounds

Rhyme def: The repetition of the sound of the stressed vowel and any sounds that follow in words that are close together

End Rhyme def: rhymes that occur at the end of lines

Rhyme Scheme def: the pattern of end of rhyme's in a poem which is indicated by a different letter for each rhyme

Internal rhyme def: rhymes that occur within a line

Approximate line def: two words that have some sound in  common, but do not rhyme exactly

Free Verse def: Poetry that does not have a regular meter or rhyme scheme

Alliteration def: repetition of the same of similar consonant sounds in words that are close together

onomatopoeia def: use of words whose sound imitates or suggest its meaning
