This monumental view of the Hudson River Valley was painted from memory in the artist's London studio. Cropsey adopted a high vantage point, looking southeast toward the distant Hudson River and the flank of Storm King Mountain. A small stream leads from the foreground, where three hunters and their dogs gaze into the sunlight. All along the meandering tributary there are signs of man's peaceful coexistence with nature: a small log cabin, grazing sheep, children playing on a bridge, and cows standing placidly in the water. Here, man neither conquers nor is subservient to nature; both coexist harmoniously. In fact, the landscape is depicted as a ready arena for further agricultural expansion. Cropsey's painting is a celebration of American nationalism.

Descriptive Note

Text: This work was painted when the artist was recuperating from a severe attack of mental illness; it depicts the garden at the asylum at Saint Rémy. The cropped composition, divided into broad areas of vivid color with monumental irises overflowing the borders of the picture, was probably influenced by the decorative patterning of Japanese woodblock prints. There are no known drawings for this painting; Van Gogh himself considered it a study. His brother Theo recognized its quality and submitted it to the Salon des Indépendants in September 1889, writing to Vincent of the exhibition: "[It] strikes the eye from afar. It is a beautiful study full of air and life."

The article deals with the use of the VRA Core 4.0 together with additional available processes and standards to produce a sound data structure within the local delivery system. With the development of the VRA Core 4.0 and the release of the companion XML schema for alpha testing, the metadata group decided to establish the Cornell implementation using the VRA Core 4.0. The article focuses on VRA Core 4.0. The VRA-sponsored Cataloging Cultural Objects project and the emergence of extensible markup language (XML) as the data exchange format of choice were the two primary catalysts for revising VRA Core 3.0. The structural changes that have been made to VRA Core 4.0 were largely done to assist in the development of the XML expression of the Core. The VRA Core 4.0 XML schema has nineteen elements and twenty-three subelements that have attributes that serve to modify the value in the data element to make it more specific.

The article discusses various new emerging metadata standards. At a Web site on the address, www.vraweb.org/CCOweb, there is a project of the Visual Resource Association (VRA). This is also responsible for the VRA Core 4.0 data structure or schema standard. The CCO is a new content standard for the visual and cultural resources community. The purpose of these standards is to provide a more standardized and international approach to cataloging both physical and digital visual and cultural objects. The cooperative cataloging and the impact of descriptive standards on interoperability is being given serious thinking now. As there is a lot of information about how CCO will work with VRA Core 4.0 and CDWA. There are no key projects currently available.
