Lesson Plan- Spelling/Grammar –with focus on: Double Letter Sounds, Long /a/

Grade Level: Third

 

Lesson Content: Going over the Spelling list this week, and focusing on the long /a/ sound. (Especially ai, and ay spellings).                 

 

I.                        Concept Objectives: Students will be able to identify the long a sounds through the long ai and ay vowel patterns. They have learned this yesterday and will show that they can see the difference, and are able to develop sense into which is which.

 

Student Prior Knowledge: Students have an understanding of how the long a sounds.

 

 II.                  Skill Objectives: By the end of this lesson:

·            Students will be able to hand in worksheet 1, and be able to complete it by being able to distinguish ai, ay vowel patterns.

III.                                 Materials:

1.          Spelling Packet (Rippleside Reading/Spelling/Grammar curriculum: Treasures Unit 2, Theme Packet)

2.          Worksheet 1

3.          Crayons

IV.                               Procedure:

A. Introduction

1. The students will begin this lesson by taking out their writer’s journal and correcting a sentence I have on the board (daily language practice, this is just an introduction for the actual lesson that will occur during reading/grammar time at 10:20).

2. Next, ask the students to take out their purple folders and to take out their spelling packet.

3. Ask students to look at the Spelling list this week.

4. Remind students that yesterday we learned ai, ay

patterns

Point out: ai- is used within a word (fail, paint)

ay- generally used at the end of a word (ray, gray)

         B. Instruction

1. Hand out worksheet 1.

2. Do the first two as a class together.

                                        3. Ask the students to do the rest of the worksheet on their own.

 

C. Conclusion/Extension

1. Can a student raise their hand and give me one example of an ai word that is in our spelling list and on this worksheet?

4. Can a student raise their hand and give me one example of an ay word that is in our spelling list and on this worksheet?

V.            Evaluation/Closure

1. Have the students completed worksheet 1?

2. Have the students completed their DLP?
