1.Gain Attention
Today we are going to be learning about one of the greatest heroes of math. He is very illusive but I was able to snap a picture of him. His name you ask? His name is “zero the hero”. I was able to snap a picture of him not to long ago. Here he is:
He is key in multiplying with a 2 digit number on the bottom. If zero the hero isn’t around we will never get the correct answers.
2.Establish purpose
Most people wonder why we need to learn to do this, who actually needs to know how to do this? Restaurant Managers, Wedding & Event planners, Bankers, etc. are people who need to know this skill. If you don’t understand something make sure you ask for clarification because you may not be the only one. So, by the end of this lesson we will be able to help a wedding planner know how many tables she needs if there are 300 people coming to the wedding and 12 people can sit at each table. When we are doing this it is important that we know how to do the process, and not simply getting the answer correct.
3.Stimulate recall of prior learning
Yesterday we learned how to multiply 2 digits by one digit, know we are going to build on that by adding 2 digits to the bottom.
Now we are going to look at the following problem 22 X 12.
4.Present content & 5.Guided learning
1. Write the following problem on the board and talk out each step as you solve it while they write down what you are doing while at their seats.
Step 1. 22 Step 2. 22 Step 3 22 Step 4 22
X12 X12 X12 X12
44 44 44 44
0 220 +220
264
6.Elicit performance
Ask everybody to do the second problem on their worksheet. Making sure they complete all four steps.
7.Provide feedback
As students finish their problem they can come up and have the problem checked. Make sure they have performed all four steps and you can see each one. Making sure they used “zero the hero” on Step 2.
8.Assess performance
After all the students have finished their practice problem make sure they understand, by making them as a class, verbally mention the four steps.
9.Enhance retention
So as we look at the original situation I brought up at the beginning of class, who can tell me how many tables a wedding planner will need, so all the wedding guests will have a seat.
