Scene One
Characters: Alijah - 17 years old, a Junior in high school, very caring, overprotective of his
mother, smart minded, Cambodian and Caucasian.
Kim - A mother, has two children's-Daughter and son name Jane and Alijah. Has severe cancer, 49 years old, husband died from NASCAR racing, Cambodian.
Jane - 16 years old, Sophomore in high school, smart minded, caring, struggles in school, Cambodian and Caucasian.
Setting: Lives in Denver, Colorado. At home, in mother’s infirmary room, house, kitchen, outside.
At Rise: Alijah in his room, filling out paper work. Jane, getting medicine from the cabinet. Slow music playing from the living room. A loud sound of mother groaning in pain coming from the hallway in her room, Jane running to mother’s room [loosing her breath] , calling out Alijah’s name to help. Alijah running over with a bucket of warm water and a small towel with sadness in his eyes.
Alijah
[breathing heavily, wipes mother’s forehead with a warm towel, smiling at her, without looking away from mother he talks to Jane]
Jane, can you please grab me the blanket from inside the closet. The one with a butterfly on it, and also get the shot medicine from the kitchen cabinet; thank you.
Jane
[Getting up quickly, she goes towards the closet and grabs the blanket, smiling at mother she tucked her in with the blanket, with little tears swelling up in her eyes.]
Mom, I love you so much. Please keep strong, we need you. Alijah needs you, and I need you.
[Leans in to kiss her mother on the cheek]
Kim-[mother]
[staring at Alijah and Jane with tears rolling down her cheeks, she smiles big, shaking her head]
I’m not going to leave you guys, I promise. I will get better soon...
Alijah
[Gets up with excitement, smiling fake, stares at mother]
So! Mom, where you wanna eat? You want pizza? A big mac? Junk food? Hurry, get dressed! :) Jane, get the wheelchair ready please and pack up mom’s medicine, also dress her warm. Thanks sweetheart.
Kim-[mother]
[sits up very slowly, and takes a sigh....]
Alright! Let’s get going, I am hungry now.
Jane
[in closet grabbing clothes and shoes.]
So momma, which one do you want to wear? The purple one or the green one?
Kim-[mother]
Hmmm, I will go with the green one. It would make me look bright, brighter than usual!
Alijah
[Grabbing the keys, standing at the door waiting]
Alright, let’s get going! :)
Jane
[Sitting next to mom in the car]
Hey, we should totally go to take pictures. Professional pictures.
Kim[mother]
[soft voice, calm, grabs for Jane’s hand]
Darling, I don’t look nice now. Maybe you and Alijah should take one together so I can keep it in my wallet.
Alijah
[Makes a big u-turn on the street, smiling]
We are going to take a picture all together.
Jane
[smiling big, laughs]
Yay! I love you guys.
Scene 2
Alijah - 17 years old, a Junior in high school, very caring, overprotective of his mother, smartminded, Cambodian and Caucasian.

Setting: In the parking lot, waiting in line in Pro Foto
At Rise: Alijah, Mom, Jane waiting for their names to be called to take pictures, sitting down, whispering amongst each other.
Mom-[Kim]
[nervous, angry, standing up wanting to leave]
Everyone is staring at me....let’s leave.
Alijah
[getting up grabs mom’s hand to sit back down, angry]
Who cares if they’re staring, they can stare all they want! I don’t care.
Alijah
[getting up, faces to people who are staring, yells loudly with frustration and anger]
What the hell are you looking at!? huh?! What’s wrong with you people now and days! Got a problem?!
Jane
[gets up, pulls Alijah to sit, talking with a soft voice, but does not look at him]
Alijah....it’s OK. I think we should leave now. Mom does not want to be here no more.................Alijah?
[Jane looking up, does not see Alijah anywhere, freaks out]
Jane
[ hearing Alijah’s voice outside, she gets up and runs outside quickly]
Mom, stay here..I'll be back.
Jane-
[seeing Alijah and a stranger fighting]
[Runs, grabs Alijah] What the hell Alijah! Omg.
mom-kim
[ standing next to the door,soft, low voice, soft weeps.]
What happened.......?
[Mom, falls to the floor, loses her balance, shes weak]
Alijah and Jane
[They both run towards mom, weeping]
Mom, are you okay?! Someone...please help! Help!
Mom-Kim
[soft sobs, faint voice]
Jane....Alijah...?
Alijah
[crying, watching the Paramedics take Kim (mom) inside]
Jane, we have to get jobs. We might have to drop out of school. If we get the money, we can make her all better again.
Jane
[looking down, then looks up to Alijah with a smile]
Yes, I will tomorrow. We can go job hunting while momma is resting in the hospital.
Scene 3
Characters: Alijah - 17 years old, a Junior in high school, very caring, overprotective of his mother, smart minded, Cambodian and Caucasian.
Ms. Mary - Secretary of the school, blonde, 32 years old, very judgemental.
Jane - 16 years old, Sophomore in high school, smart minded, caring, struggles in school, Cambodian and Caucasian.
Setting: Lives in Denver, Colorado. At school office.
At Rise: Alijah and Jane in the car chatting. Pulls up in the driveway at school.
Alijah
[takes a deep breath, talking to Jane]
I always thought we were going to graduate one day...
Jane
[confident smile, giggles.]
We will one day, eventually.. We can always go back and finish.
Alijah
[Laughs]
ha ha one day, right. Ok, you ready? let’s go.
Alijah and Jane
[Walking towards the school office]
Alijah- Hello Ma’m, we are here because my sister and I are wanting to drop out of school. What do we have to do?
Ms. Mary-secretary of school
[concern face expression, sighs..]
Um, well. Why would you want to do that? I encourage you stay in school because you guys have really good grades..as I can see hear. [points to the screen of the computer]
Jane
[stares at Ms. Mary with a mean look.]
Ma’m, no need for questions. Can you just give us the papers please.
Ms. Mary
[irritated]
Sure. I just recommend you guys take the GED.
Alijah
[impatient, confident voice]
Yes, thank you for you time.
Ms. Mary
[Says underneath her breath, rude]
I hope it’s at least a good reason why ya dropping out.......
Jane
[defensive, turns around]
Yes, a very good reason actually! You wouldn’t even understand.
Alijah
[Grabbing Jane’s hand, pulling her, walks out the door together.]
Jane! Let’s go.
Jane
[in the parking lot getting inside the car, angry]
Oooo, I wish I was her age. I would hit her!
Scene 4

Mom - A mother, has two children's-Daughter and son name Jane and Alijah. Has severe cancer, 49 years old, husband died from NASCAR racing, Cambodian.

Setting: Lives in Denver, Colorado. At the hospitial.
At Rise: Alijah and Jane waking into mom’s hospital room. Mom is still sleeping. Jane and Alijah sits down in a chair next to mom.
Alijah
[whispering to Jane, leaning in.]
We are not to tell mother what we did today, you hear me?
Jane
[confident smile, winks.]
Of course, Alijah..I am thinking about going into modeling so I can make more money to help mom. Plus, theres always this lady who keeps trying to give me her card. She is always encouraging me to do it.
Alijah
[Head down, faint voice]
I am thinking about NASCAR. I know if momma finds out she would be very angry and upset in all kind of ways. That’s why we don’t tell her. Plus, she will say “You’re trying to kill yourself like your dad.”
Jane
[Confused face, wondering]
Who will watch her, if we happen to be gone? Working?
Alijah
[concern face expression, sighs..]
We will have to put her in a nursing home for now or something, until we get things together. We need the money now so we can pay for surgery. I’ll figure it out, don’t worry.
Jane
[staring at mom]
Shh..mom is waking up.
mom
[yawns, opening her eyes slowly, turns around to look at Alijah and Jane]
Hey guys, how long were you here for?
Alijah
[sadden voice]
Not for long, about 10 minutes. How are you feeling? Better?
Jane
[whispering, gets up, leaves the door.]
I’ll be back....
Mom
[sitting up slowly, Alijah gets up to help]
Yes, I am feeling better. I think is the drugs they’re giving me. I am hungry.
Alijah
[Nodding, smiles]
I think Jane went to go get the nurses for food, she’ll be back soon.
Alijah
[low voice, scared, starring at mom]
Mom? Jane and I are going to be away for a while. I already got this planned out. Um.......aunt Jenna is going to come down from Boston and help you, take care of you. Jane and I are going to work out of the city, we will be traveling a lot.
Mom
[Looking down, stares at Alijah and smiles]
I understand, I knew this was going to happen anyways, i’ll be ok.
Scene 5
Characters: Alijah - 17 years old, a Junior in high school, very caring, overprotective of his mother, smart minded, Cambodian and Caucasian.
Jane - 16 years old, Sophomore in high school, smart minded, caring, struggles in school, Cambodian and Caucasian.
Setting: At the Airport, it is raining outside.
At Rise: Jane and Alijah waving goodbye, walking the opposite way of each other. Jane gets on a plane, Alijah getting on a different plane.
Alijah
[Hugs, kisses Jane on the cheek]
You, take good care of yourself. We will see each other soon, again. Be safe, I love yu.
Jane
[crying, nodds quickly]
Ok, I will. I promise, take care. I love you too.----
Alijah

Mom - A mother, has two children's-Daughter and son name Jane and Alijah. Has severe cancer, 50 years old, husband died from NASCAR racing, Cambodian.
Aunt Jenna- 38 years old, sister with mom, is taking care of mom at home in Denver for 9 months already.
Jane - 17 years old, a drop out, smart minded, caring, Cambodian and Caucasian. A model in New
Setting: In Denver, Colorado. At home.
At Rise: It’s been 9 months, Alijah and Jane knocking on mom’s door, just got back from their far away jobs. Haven’t seen mom in 9 months.
Alijah
[takes a deep breath, smiling at Jane]
I wonder what she’s going to say...I hope she’s doing better. Tomorrow we are going to fly to LA to get mom’s surgery done. She will be healthy again.
Jane
[Smiling, getting tears in her eyes.]
She will stay with us until we are old now. I am excited.....
Aunt Jenna
[Opens door slowly, shocked face, gives a big hug and kiss to Alijah and Jane]
OMG! What? when did you guys get here? Why didn’t you call? How are you!?
Alijah and Jane
[Laughing, and smiling.]
I am fine. Where’s mom?
Aunt Jenna
[Smiling, holding the door open as Alijah and Jane walks in.]
Oh, yes. She is in the room watching t.v. You be amazed how well she is doing. The doctors says “You got one strong sister, don’t you.”
Jane and Alijah
[walking in mom’s room, smiling and crying, runs to hug her]
Mom! I missed you! How are you? How are you feeling?
mom
[jaw dropped, crying with happiness]
Omg, you guys.....
Alijah
[getting up from the floor, looks at mom and smiles.]
Sooner the better, we are going on a trip to LA. Jane pack up mom’s things, i’ll grab the passports. Aunt Jenna......?
Aunt Jenna
[Turns around, with tears in her eyes.]
Yes, darling?
Alijah
[walking towards her, gives her a big hug]
Thank you for taking care of her while we were gone. It means a lot! Now, would you like to come with us on our trip?
Aunt Jenna
[looking confused, nods..]
Um, sure! :)
Jane
[Walking out the door with mom, everyone gets in the car]
yay! let’s go, let’s go.
Mom
[Sitting in the car, chatting]
So, are you guys going to tell me what you have been doing..? What’s your jobs? and where are we going anyways?
Jane
[smiling, stares at mom, grabs her hands]
Momma, I am a model now in New York. They choose me, they wanted me. I make a lot of money.
Alijah
[looking at mom in the rear mirrors...slow talking]
I’m a.. a NASCAR driver in Daytons, Florida. Just like dad, we are only doing this to get the money and help you be all better. No more Cancer mom. No more.
Mom
[looking up, starts sobbing.]
WOW. Amazing....What about school? What happened? Where are we going?!
Alijah
[smiling at mom]
LA. The good doctors are there. He is going to make it go all away. Jane and I have it all under control.....
Jane
[Smiling, holds mom]
You’re never going to leave us, not now. We got the money mom! :)
