Performance:
- Make sure you have the original part to give to the judge. All measures must be numbered on that score; you may play off a copy.
- Look for your warm-up room and performance room upon arrival.
- Arrive at the Warm-up room early (Approx. 30 minutes before your performance).
- Warm-up your instrument about 10 minutes before your performance time, there will be a person in the room that will instruct you when to begin.
- When you arrive in the performance room (a representative from the warm-up room will usually escort you to your performance room) relax and tune with the piano. Brass players be sure not to point your bell directly at the judge.
- Perform your solo or ensemble the best you can, don’t worry about your mistakes (they will happen).
- Listen to comments from the Judge.
- Leave the room and put your instrument away.
- Return to the performance room and wait for your rating and your judges copy.
- A “I” or a “II” rating receives a medal. Find the medals table to get your medal.
Ratings
Division I = Represents an excellent level of performance and musicianship for the event
Division II = Represents a good performance, but not worth of the highest rating because of minor
defects in the performance or ineffective interpretation. Shows much accomplishment and promise
Division III = Represents a fair performance but not outstanding. Shows accomplishment and promise but is lacking in some essential qualities.
Division IV = Represents a poor performance which is lacking in many essential qualities.
Please listen to other events, even some not from our school. Listen to what the judges say to the performers. Have fun.
If you have questions please find me or any MSBOA worker at the festival.
