The following is a step-by-step guide to creating a new poll. There is also an accompanying Demo Video.

1. Once logged into your account, click “Create New Poll” in the top left corner of your account page.

2. After clicking the  “Create New Poll” button, a new window will pop up that looks like this:

3. In this new window, type in the question you would like to ask your audience.

Then hit “Enter” or click the logo to the right.

4. Once your question has been entered, you will have the option to review your question and make changes before saving the new poll. You can also click Multiple Choice to make your poll a multiple choice poll, or leave it as Open Ended to create an open ended poll.

5. Once you have formatted the question click “Continue.”

6. If successful, you will see a window showing your brand new poll

Note:

If you are wanting to create multiple polls with ease, type your questions in a text editor such as Microsoft Word, Pages, or Google Docs. Type your question followed by a question mark, then type each answer followed by a comma or semicolon. Be sure to have each additional question on a new line.

Once you have all your questions ready, simply copy and paste your questions into the Poll Everywhere “Create New Poll” dialogue box. You can review and make changes to the questions and then click continue to create multiple polls at once.

How to Copy a Poll

The following is a step-by-step guide for copying a poll.

There are three different areas you can find polls to copy, My Polls, Account Polls, and Public Polls.

1. Copying from My Polls - Copying from your ‘My Polls’ screen allows you to duplicate polls you have already created. From the ‘My Polls’ tab hover over a poll’s title and click the ‘copy’ link. You will be brought to a screen that displays the original poll’s question and answers for you to edit if you choose. Note: The question will now begin with “Copy” and the number copied in parenthesis. This text can be removed.

2. Copying from Account Polls - Copying from your ‘Account Polls’ screen allows you to duplicate polls your sub-users have already created. This is a convenient way to share polls between multiple users on an account. From the ‘Account Polls’ tab hover over a poll’s title and click the ‘copy’ link. You will be brought to a screen that displays the original poll’s question and answers for you to edit if you choose. Note: The question will now begin with “Copy” and the number copied in parenthesis. This text can be removed.

3. Copying from Public Polls - You can search a public listing of shared polls and copy them to your own account. Click the ‘Public Polls’ tab to begin browsing these polls. When you find one you like by using the search field or browsing through the pages, you can click ‘Ask this question’ to copy the poll into your own account.

How to Vote

The following two sections describe the different voting/response methods. If you would like tips and best practices for encouraging participation visit http://www.polleverywhere.com/presenter-notes to download the short PDF guide.

Voting Guide for Poll Creators

This step-by-step guide will assist you in learning the multiple ways you can choose to have your audience respond to your polls.

Getting Started

        Creating a Poll

1. Once you have created your account, log in and under the “My Polls” section, click the

“Create New Poll” link at the top left corner of your account page.

2. In the “Create New Poll” dialogue box, decide whether to have an open ended or multiple choice type question. For more information on creating polls, click here.

Now that you’ve created your poll, the methods of responding are listed on the right side of your poll window. Below is a sample poll highlighting the various ways your audience can respond to your polls.

Text Messaging

Multiple Choice Polls

In the United States, participants can respond to a poll by texting to the number “22333” followed by a voting keyword, such as 9860 or 9861.

Free Text Poll (Open Ended Poll)

A free text poll allows participants to send free-form text responses or short answers instead of pre-defined choices. A free text poll might ask, "What questions do you have for the presenter?" and participants can send in any short answer they want. Their answers might be just one word, a short phrase, or an entire sentence.

When responding to a free text poll, the similar method for responding to a multiple choice poll is used. Text the number “22333” followed by the poll code and then your custom message. For example: Text 5176 Hawaii! :) to 22333

International Coverage

To determine if your SMS poll will work in your country, please visit our international coverage page. Look up your country and carrier on this full coverage list and see which international phone numbers work for your mobile carrier.

Sessions

If you are wanting shorter keywords (A, B, C, etc) and are showing several polls during a presentation, our Sessions feature would be a perfect solution! To learn more about enabling Sessions for your polls, click here!

Twitter

Having Twitter available to your audience can be an attractive way to get regular Twitter users involved.

1. To display audience instructions on your poll screen for how to vote via Twitter, be sure that the box is checked under the “How People Can Respond” section.

2.

Note: To share a link to your poll via Twitter, click “Tweet” under the Share and Publish section.

Web

Being able to vote through the web is perfect for smartphone and tablet users, or participants using a computer. Once a participant has voted, your web-device will instantly update to reflect the poll that you're viewing.

Pollev.com

Pollev.com is a shortened URL that will redirect to www.polleverywhere.com/vote. This page can be used to submit voting codes via the web much like a text message or Twitter response.

Pollev.com/reserve Page

The “Pollev.com/reserve” page is a way to setup your own unique voting page. Participants who visit your page will see the poll you are currently displaying live and will not be required to vote with keywords/codes. Instead they will see the question and answer choices and be able to select them on their web enabled device.

1. Before participants can vote with your unique link, you must set up your “Pollev.com/reserve” page. For setup information for your Pollev.com Page, click here.

2. Once your Pollev.com Page has been set up, the “Pollev.com/reserve” link can then be shared with your participants for easy and convenient voting!

Private Link

If you would like a more secure and private way for your participants to vote, use the Private Link option or click the “Live Chart Link” under the Share and Publish section. This URL is the same as the one in your browser’s address bar when you are viewing the poll.

Voting Guide for Participants

3. After entering your Twitter login information, click “Authorize App.” You will then be redirected back to your Settings page. After authorizing your Twitter account, you can use your Twitter handle to accept votes by checking the box to “Enable tweets to be used for voting on your polls.”

How to Keep Your Polls Private

Your poll's question (but not its results/responses) is indexed by search engines unless you disable this setting in the Settings tab.

With "Keep all of my polls private" checked, your polls are private unless you share the the secret poll URL (web link) with others, or embed the poll widget in a website. When you share the poll's URL, only the poll's owner can see the controls on the right, view the detailed results, or correlate answers between polls.

We encourage you to keep your poll questions public, and draw inspiration from browsing everyone else's public questions as well. You will not be able to share your polls or search public polls if you enable private polls.

Note: Your poll results/responses are always kept private. You will only be able to view responses by logging in as an account owner or authorized user. Or by viewing the results from a poll’s secret  URL (web link).

This data will remain in the system until the Poll itself is deleted. We take nightly backups of our database, and each database is retained for 30 days. After 30 days the backup is deleted permanently. Within this period it is possible to recover something deleted by a customer (despite our warnings); however, this is a somewhat difficult process that requires additional fees for recovery. Polls created and run in one day, and deleted before midnight PST, will never hit any backup. These polls cannot be recovered. Please direct any questions about data storage or recovery to support@polleverywhere.com

Screenshot of a web poll

The “PollEv.com/_____” page will always display the current poll you are viewing when logged in via the website, PowerPoint, or the Mac Presenter App. This features is designed to follow along, live, as you navigate between polls. It is NOT meant to be used as a means to distribute polls to your participants.

To distribute polls you can use the private link option below, or the “Survey View” link. Click here to learn how to use Survey View!

How to Group Polls and Use Survey View

The following is a step-by-step guide to creating and using a “Survey View” to take surveys.

  1. Navigate to your My Polls page inside of your Poll Everywhere account.

  1. Create polls if you have not already. Don’t know how? Click here!
  2. Check the checkbox to the left of each poll’s title that you would like to be part of your survey, then click the gray Group button at the top of the page.
  3. Once your Group is made, you can name it by clicking New Group (above the list of polls you just made into a Group), which then allows you to enter a new name. The name of your Group is also used as the title of your survey.

  1. Once your polls are inside of a Group, the Survey View is turned on. To access your survey, all you have to do is click the Survey View link that is revealed when hovering your mouse over that Group’s name.

  1. To distribute your survey, just distribute the URL (ex: http://www.polleverywhere.com/survey/C8mkT4O7e) of your Survey View.

Note: You can add “/intro” to the end of your survey link to show one question at a time as opposed to all questions on the same page. Give it a try!

How to Group Polls and Enable a Session

**This feature is going away in about a month, but don't worry! We are replacing it with something much better. In the meantime, only use this feature if you are presenting soon.**

Sessions are a good idea when you’re showing several polls during an event. The benefit of a Session is that it allows you to text/tweet in responses using a shorter keyword (usually only one character).

The following is a step-by-step guide to creating and using a Session to shorten response keywords of multiple polls.

  1. Navigate to your My Polls page inside of your Poll Everywhere account.
  2. Create polls if you have not already. Don’t know how? Click here!
  3. Check the checkbox to the left of each poll’s title that you would like to be part of your survey, then click the gray Group button at the top of the page.
  4. Once your polls are inside of a Group, all that is required to create a Session is clicking the green Session button that’s revealed when hovering your mouse over a Group’s title.
  5. Once you’ve enabled a Session, you are given a Session keyword, which by default is a number. Good news, though! If you’re on a plan that supports keywords, you can change the Session number into an actual word so it’s shorter and easier to remember. To create a Session keyword instead of the default Session ID, click the title of the Group (as if you were going to rename it), then the Session Keyword number on the right side will become editable. Try typing in a word you’d like to use and we’ll check to see if it’s available, in real-time!
  6. After you find a Session keyword you’re satisfied with, just click the gray Save button! Then, you’re all set. We will display the new Session keyword on your polls. Your audience will text the session keyword to join the session first, and then they can vote using the single digit keywords now displayed on your polls. Test it out!

Note: If you check a box and then un-check a box for a response, the response will not be removed from live screens until the poll is reloaded.

How to Set up a Custom Keyword

The following guide will provide instructions for setting up a custom keyword. With custom keywords, you get to choose what words people text to participate in your polls. 3. Once you have created a keyword, click “Save poll” at the bottom of the page.

Acquiring Premium Keywords

Short keywords (3 characters or less) are in high demand, so we play traffic cop to prevent squatting. Premium keywords are available for $5/keyword with a 5 keyword minimum (per month). To reserve a premium keyword email us at questions@polleverywhere.com.

At this point you can correct any errors in your CSV file and start this process again from the beginning or click "Continue" to import them

5. Once we're done importing we'll show you the records we imported successfully and those that we couldn't import..

6. You'll see all your imports and their status on the main Import Participants page.

Note: Registering participants is included on all of our paid plans, and there's no limit to the number of participants you can register.

6. Clicking the Show Correctness button will instantly outline the correct answer (best to wait till voting has stopped to display the correct answer!). Clicking that same button again (now Hide Correctness) will instantly take the outline away.

7. Not only can you show the correct answer to your participants, live, you can also see which participants answered correctly when you run a Report on the poll. There are a few ways to generate a Report, but we’ll just do it from our My Polls page.

8. Once you’re at your My Polls page, click the checkbox to the left of whichever poll(s) you would like to generate the Report for, then click the gray Report button at the top.

9. After clicking the gray Report button, you will be taken to our default Report, which is a List. Click the Report Card link on the left to see a graded Report by participant, that displays the answer and correctness of each poll added to your report, the number and percentage correct out of the polls added to the report, the number of unaswered questions added to the report, and the rank of each participant.  Note: click the “Show my participants” checkbox on the right if you would like it to show the identifiable information corresponding to each vote.

You can download the Report as a .CSV file and it will also show whether or not each participant chose the correct answer.

How to Use Polls in PowerPoint (Windows)

The following is a step-by-step guide for downloading Poll Everywhere polls as PowerPoint slides.

  1. Navigate to your My Polls page inside of your Poll Everywhere account.

  1. Create polls if you have not already.
  2. Check the checkbox to the left of each poll that you would like to be included in your PowerPoint presentation, then click the gray “Download as .PPT” (PowerPoint 2003 and lower) or “.PPTX” (PowerPoint 2007 and higher) button.

  1. Once the PowerPoint file is downloaded, you can open it and you will see a few instructional slides at the beginning (which can be removed if you’d like) which are helpful for audiences if it’s their first time responding to Poll Everywhere polls. You can also reorder and move polls and slides. Our polls only work during actual full-screen presentations, so don’t be alarmed if you don’t see them working!
  2. That’s about it! Just go through the PowerPoint presentation as you normally would!

Advanced PowerPoint (for Windows) Tips

Poll Everywhere has been tested successfully with Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows 2010, 2007, 2003, 2002 (Office XP), 2000, and 97.

For Macs, please consider using our Mac presenter. Learn more about that here: Poll Everywhere Presenter

If you frequently work with multiple polls in PowerPoint you may find it faster to copy and paste poll objects and re-assign them based on their unique Poll URL. Each poll question has a URL that can be found in a browser’s address bar when viewing a poll on the website.

Polls are hosted in Shockwave Flash ActiveX objects within PowerPoint. To link to a Poll’s Flash object simply add “.swf” to the end of a poll’s URL. To change which poll is displayed in a given object in PowerPoint, you edit the object's properties and change the URL.

To learn this trick, follow these instructions:

  1. Open your slideshow in PowerPoint or create a new slideshow.
  2. If using PowerPoint 97, 2000, 2001 (XP), or 2003, make sure the Control Toolbox is displayed. Right-click the toolbar area and select "Control Toolbox." (Skip to step 4)
  3. If using PowerPoint 2007 or 2010, make sure the Developer tab is enabled.
  1. Click the Office menu and choose PowerPoint Options at the bottom.
  2. Check the "Show Developer Tab" in the Popular section of the Options window.
  3. Click OK to save the settings.
  4. Back in your slideshow, now click the Developer tab in the ribbon.
  1. Click the More Controls button. It looks like a hammer with an ellipsis ("...")
  2. In the list, find "Shockwave Flash Object.", and click OK.
  3. The cursor becomes a cross and you may now draw the box that will contain the poll on your slide.
  4. After drawing the box, you may re-size it. Large polls look best.
  5. Right-click the box and select Properties.
  6. Click the empty box to the right of the "Movie" property in the Properties window to edit this property.
  7. Copy & Paste a poll’s URL into the textbox and add “.swf” to the end. Like this:

http://www.polleverywhere.com/multiple_choice_polls/LTIxNDIyODY0NzE.swf

  1. Close the Properties window without modifying any other properties. You will customize your poll in the next few steps.
  2. Run your slideshow in presentation mode (shortcut key: F5) and advance to the poll slide. In a moment, your poll will show a progress bar indicating that it is loading.

Adobe Flash version issues may affect the proper display of polls in PowerPoint. Make sure you have the latest version of Flash installed for both Firefox and Internet Explorer. Learn how to fix your Flash installation. Once it appears, you may customize colors and text sizes using the "options" link in the lower left, just as you do on the Poll Everywhere website. Now, when you arrive at this slide in your presentation, the poll will automatically display and your audience can immediately respond. You can continue to add more polls to the presentation by duplicating the object or slide and changing the url or by drawing a new box for each.

How to Use Poll Everywhere with Prezi

Note: Embedded polls will only work in online ‘prezis’ displayed in fullscreen mode.

The following is a step-by-step guide for using Poll Everywhere polls in a Prezi presentation.

  1. Let’s start off by downloading the poll we’d like to use in our Prezi presentation. Once logged in, navigate to your My Polls page and click the poll you’d like to use in your Prezi presentation.
  2. Once you’re looking at your poll, click the gray Share and Publish box to the right of the poll. Then click “Download for Prezi” link to download the Flash (.swf) file we will insert into our Prezi presentation.

  1. Visit http://prezi.com to log into your Prezi account or create one if you don’t already have one. Once logged in, you should be taken to http://prezi.com/your/.
  2. If you have an existing Prezi presentation you’d like to insert a Poll Everywhere poll in, select that presentation. If not, just click the “New prezi” link.

  1. If you had an existing presentation, you can skip this step. If not and you just created your first presentation, you should see a box with six different presentation themes. We’ll just use “The Road Ahead - Business Plan” theme for this demonstration. Click “The Road Ahead - Business Plan” theme, click Preview, then click Start editing at the top if you’re satisfied with the theme.
  2. Now you should be able to edit your presentation. Just to get a little familiar with the presentation, try changing the big letters, “The Road Ahead” by double-clicking on them. You can write anything you’d like. If you were able to change that phrase, let’s move on. If not, try using the mouse wheel to zoom in and out - sometimes it’s hard to select things if they’re too small.
  3. Let’s add a poll! You should see some blue circles on the top left of your screen - try clicking the Insert circle!

  1. Once the circle animates and shows Insert as the biggest circle, click the File circle to browse for the Flash (.swf) file we downloaded earlier.

  1. Once the window comes up that allows you to browse for the Flash (.swf) file (poll) you downloaded from our site, find it and click Open.

  1. The Flash (.swf) file (poll) should then be inserted onto your screen. However, you may not notice it, because when Prezi inserts Flash Objects, they’re GIGANTOR. The giant white box obstructing your presentation is probably us. Hi, hello.

  1. No problem, though! Hold shift and try to click our giant white box (we want to select it so we can shrink it!). You’ll know you’ve successfully selected the box when a blue-radar looking thing appears.

  1. Once you get a hold of that blue radar thing, the fun begins! Let’s start by shrinking this beast. Keep hitting the minus button ( - ). A lot. Until the poll looks like it actually goes with your presentation. You may also need to rotate the poll if it looks backwards. To do so, click and drag the outer-most dashed circle to rotate the poll. You can also move the poll by clicking and holding the hand in the center of the circle. The ultimate goal is getting our poll in a pair of the brackets [ ].

  1. So, as I just mentioned, we want to make it so our poll fits inside, or at most, on top of the brackets [ ]. The brackets are how Prezi navigates through your presentation. To give you an idea of how it all works, click the Show (play) button on the bottom right of your screen to start your presentation (don’t worry, you won’t mess anything up!). Click the arrows on the bottom right of your screen to navigate through your presentation. You’ll see that it takes the screen to each set of brackets [ ]. To exit the presentation mode, press escape (Esc). You can insert more brackets or move existing ones. But for now, just try to place your poll in the set of brackets closest to the bottom (if you’re using the same theme as I am).
  2. You now know enough to at least use our polls inside of a Prezi presentation, but I’ll briefly explain some other things you may need to know.
  1. That concludes the Using Poll Everywhere with Prezi guide. I hope you can find some awesome ways to use Prezi with our polls; it really is a great piece of software...even though there’s some aspects that aren’t as seamless as they could be!
