Commitment to achieving Net Zero

VKL Healthcare is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050.

Baseline Emissions Footprint

Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions. Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.

Baseline Year: 2023

Additional Details relating to the Baseline Emissions calculations.

Before 2023, VKL Healthcare had not assessed or reported in a way that included Scope 3 emissions.

Recognising that the bulk of its emissions were from Scope 1 (specifically the use of diesel for ambulances) VKL had previously focused on reducing the use of diesel fuel.

In the financial year 2019/20, which we have previously used as the baseline, 91429 litres of diesel was used. By the financial year 2023/24, we had reduced diesel use to 41478 litres. This is a 55% reduction.

As of 2024, we have taken a new baseline that includes Scope1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions.

We have publicly signed up to the SME Climate Commitment. In doing so, we have committed to:

  • Halve our greenhouse gas emissions before 2030.
  • Achieve net zero emissions before 2050.
  • Disclose our progress on a yearly basis.

Emissions reduction targets

We have reduced our scope 1 emissions by 55% since 2019.

In order to continue our progress to achieving Net Zero, we have adopted carbon reduction targets.

We project that carbon emissions will decrease over the next five years to 125 tCO2e by 2029. This is a reduction of 19%.

Carbon Reduction Projects

Completed Carbon Reduction Initiatives

The following environmental management measures and projects have been completed or implemented since the 2019 baseline. The carbon emission reduction achieved by these schemes equate to 133 tCO2e, a 55% reduction against the 2019 baseline and the measures will be in effect when performing the contract.

Completed carbon reduction projects include the systematic replacement of vehicles for more fuel efficient makes and engine models, the introduction of a real-time driver feedback device in-cab that coaches drivers to replace any fuel-inefficient driving with smoother and more fuel-efficient driving practices, and focusing our services on a smaller geographic area to minimise unnecessary ‘dead mileage’.

Though Scope 2 and Scope 3 were not included in our original 2019 baseline and so the effects are not measurable, we have:

In the future we hope to implement further measures such as the introduction of hybrid or electric vehicles.

Declaration and Sign Off

This Carbon Reduction Plan has been completed in accordance with PPN 06/21 and associated guidance and reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans.

Emissions have been reported and recorded in accordance with the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the GHG Reporting Protocol corporate standard and uses the appropriate Government emission conversion factors for greenhouse gas company reporting.

Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions have been reported in accordance with SECR requirements, and the required subset of Scope 3 emissions have been reported in accordance with the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard.

This Carbon Reduction Plan was reviewed and signed off by the board of directors on 31/07/24.
