MALIGNANT HYPERTHERMIA (MH)

What is MH?

MH is a hypermetabolic condition that results from triggers such as Succinylcholine or Volatile (Inhalational) agents

Preparing the OR for a susceptible patient:

Remove vaporizers from anesthesia machine

Replace CO2 absorbers with fresh ones

Turn O2 flow meters to 10l/min for at least 20 minutes prior to case

Have MH tote readily available in OR area

Have 2 infusion pumps (BARD and programmable (Braun) syringe pumps) in OR

Be prepared for alternative anesthesia techniques, such as spinal or TIVA

Helping During a MH crisis

Bring MH tote to room stat

Place Charcoal filters on anesthesia circuit where it connects to anesthesia machine

Be prepared to bring iced saline to room

Be prepared to run blood gases and other labs
