Class Description:
Learn to express the excitement and joy of creating, shaping, and making objects on the wood lathe. Emphasis will be on developing the basic foundations of good technique and form, the importance of tool control, sharpening, and developing muscle memory. Instruction will include a variety of skill-building exercises that lead into making a basic bowl, a spinning top, and a plate. Matt will discuss the ergonomics of an efficient and sustainable woodturning practice. All levels welcome.
Supply Information:
Your workshop includes a kit that will be provided by the instructor, including both dry and unseasoned end grain bowl and spindle blanks. Please bring a check for $40 made out to your instructor, to be collected at the first class meeting.
Students should also bring the following materials:
Suggested:
- Any favorite woodturning tools that you already own would like to work with
- A sketchbook or notebook and favorite drawing or writing utensils
- An apron or clothes you don’t mind getting messy (Snow Farm aprons are available for sale).
Important Safety Guidelines for the Woodworking Studio:
Proper attire:
- No open-toe shoes. (Wear something comfortable for standing for long periods of time.) Leather shoes or work boots are best.
Please also bring the following safety gear:
- Pair of clear safety glasses and ear protection (shared equipment is available if you do not have your own)
- Pair of comfortable work gloves (cheap ones are fine)
- Hair tie to tie back long hair
Open Studio Guidelines for the Woodworking Studio:
Instructors in woodworking will outline safety guidelines for students who are staying to work during open studio. The table saw is never to be used without the instructor present. The use of all other power tools and equipment is limited and is at the discretion of your instructor. Please read the following guidelines as you plan to make use of your open studio time:
- Between 4:30pm and 9pm students may work alone in the studio. We suggest bringing a cell phone in case an emergency arises and you need to contact the on-site coordinator - their number is posted on the studio bulletin board.
- After 9pm, when the coordinator makes final rounds, we require that two individuals are present in the studio in order to continue working in the studio.
- There is to be no consumption of drugs or alcohol in the studios, nor shall students work with studio equipment when under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- The last person in any studio is responsible for turning off indoor lights and closing up.
