Congratulations to the speech and debate team. At Harvard University, Zach Lu was third  out of twenty at the Round-Robin tournament and  17th out of almost three hundred at the open invitational tournament in Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Maia  Katnelson was second place speaker in junior varsity Lincoln-Douglas, out of two hundred and forty-entrants.

The annual Needham Jazz Night will take place tonight at 7:00 pm in the Auditorium and features the High School and Middle School Jazz Ensembles and the High School Contemporary Music Ensemble. Don't miss this year's guest artist, Venezuelan trombonist, Angel Subero. There is a suggested donation of $10/adults and $5/students and seniors at the door with a $25 cap for families.

Save A Child's Heart will be hosting multiple events for Heart Health Awareness Month in February including a Spin Class on the first of the month, and a fundraiser at Stacy's Juice Bar from 3:30-4:30 through the week of the 3rd! Congratulations to the speech and debate team. In Lexington, Vijay Fisch was tournament champion in varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Tommy Langford, Roshan Pillai, Nora Srinivas, Steven Sun, and Zamzam Ali qualified to states in novice Lincoln-Douglas Debate. At Natick.  Henry Huvos  was fourth  in both impromptu and original oratory.   Annie Stein was third in poetry, Abby Hynes was fifth in prose. Senior Matt Peljovich was a finalist in Congressional Debate.   Lily Koplan earned an honorable mention in  declamation. Additional state bids were earned by  Noah Basson, Sara Habermas,  John Lively, Elizabeth Schwartz and  Jason  Stein. Jack Stein was also recognized for excellence.

The cost is $5 per person and tickets will be sold on MySchoolBucks. All grades are welcome. Students MAY invite students from other schools, however, there must be written permission from the guest's parent/guardian AND the school they attend.

The NHS Student Council is excited to announce that they will be hosting the annual community-wide Bonfire at Needham High School on Tuesday, November 26th from 5-7 pm! After, there will be a Meet and Greet with the NHS football, dance, and cheer teams in the NHS cafeteria. Hot chocolate will be given out during the bonfire and pizza and baked goods will be available for purchase afterward in the cafeteria! The meet and greet will have a photo station and fun games that will be run by the High Schoolers.

Join the Girls Who Code Club at the Needham Public Library at 6:30 PM Tuesday evenings from October-April for girls in Grades 5 -12. Girls will learn to code through fun and simple tutorials and interactive projects. They will learn about inspiring role models and work together to create a community project that solves a problem they care about using Scratch and Python. This means that 2 days per week, we will have 10 minute homerooms and 2 days per week, we will have  X block homerooms of 30 minutes.  During the X-block homerooms, students will have the option of meeting with a teacher, catching up on work and / or engaging with some mindful movement practices and learnings.  This will take place in room 416 and we will create space and ambiance and supply mats.... unless you would like to bring and store your own!  Joining this would be an amazing way to be part of something new here at NHS :) And P.S., you don't have to be a cirque du soleil star to practice mindful movement!  It's for all levels. Come see NHS’s Senior Directed Show, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee tonight and tomorrow night at 7:00 pm in the High School Auditorium! This hilarious and heartwarming musical, complete with audience participation, portrays six middle-schoolers in their county’s 25th annual spelling bee. Fast-paced and quick-witted, the show moves the spellers along as they navigate the awkward pre-teen adolescence mishaps and struggles. The show is produced by high school seniors; directed by Isabel Dirks, music directed by Sam Feuer, and choreographed by Nicole Malouf. Tickets are available at the door for $10. Congratulations to the nationally-recognized Needham Speech and Debate Team. This past weekend at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Abby Hynes was Needham's third finalist in two years, finishing sixth in declamation. Shayan Raza finished thirteenth in original oratory, Zachary Lu seventeenth in Lincoln-Douglas Debate and Kelsey Rondini twenty-fifth in extemporaneous speaking.   Annie Stein and Matt Peljovich were the last one and last two out of advancing to elimination rounds in their events.

On this day in history, in 2015 – A baseball game between the Baltimore Orioles and the Chicago White Sox set the all-time low attendance mark for Major League Baseball. Zero fans were in attendance for the game, as the stadium was officially closed to the public due to the 2015 Baltimore protests.

The purpose of the drive is to reduce clothing waste, which ultimately harms our environment, as textiles and fabrics end up in landfills. Additionally, collecting clothes to donate will reduce the production of clothes, which reduces greenhouse gases. This will also help people who are in need of clothes.

The drive will run through Monday April 29th. There are  bins in the main office which is located in the main lobby. The clothes we collect will be donated to Needham Community Council.

Congratulations to the High School Chorus, Chamber Strings, Concert and Symphonic Bands on their excellent performances this weekend at the MICCA Concert Festival.  The concert festival is held at 8 different sites in the state, and the ensembles are evaluated by 3 highly respected adjudicators from across the country.  Each ensemble has a clinic by one of their adjudicators following their performance.  As a result of the music students hard work the Concert Band earned a silver medal, and the Chorus, Chamber Strings, and Symphonic Band each earned gold medals.

Congratulations to all Needham students who took part in the National History Day State competition at Winchester on Saturday. Special congratulations to Eleanor Mackey and Nicole Allen for winning first place in the group exhibit category, and to Sasha Rieser and Karen Nie for for winning first place in the group website category. Both have qualified for Nationals. Tillie Slosser, Claudia Schmidt, Nicole Hagen and Michelle Mittaz received Honorable Mention awards.

Congratulations to the Speech and Debate Team, which finished 8th overall at the speech portion of the state championships. Individual awards included Annie Stein - second in original oratory,  being named the reserve state champion. She was also  5th in duo with partner Shayan Raza, and 2nd in multiple with teammates Shayan, Simone Hernandez, John Lively, and Hannah Warn. Siblings joining Annie  with awards were Jason (3rd in kiddie lit) and Jack (7th in Play)- it was quite the 'Stein Way' weekend! Abby Hynes was 6th in Declamation and Henry Huvos was 6th in Impromptu. Matt Peljovich was a finalist in Congressional Debate.

The EKAL club is having a bake sale today after school. The proceeds  will go to funding education for underprivileged kids in rural India.

It’s time to register for this year’s AP exams. Exams cost $95 each, and you can register online through MySchoolBucks or in person. Online registration will remain open until March 15. Congratulations to the NHS Robotics Club, all three teams finished in the Top 8 out of 23 teams (T-10 (2nd place), HackHers (8th), and Liquid Oxygen (5th)) and  competed in the final rounds at Sunday's Tournament.  T-10 and HackHers lost in the finals, but T-10 won 2nd place Inspire and a Design award for their robot. Overall, it was a tremendous showing for Needham Robotics!

Looking for something to do over Feb. Vacation? Get the weekend off to a good start with Code Day: The event, CodeDay (codeday.org), is a 24-hour event where students have the opportunity to make games or apps of their own design. As the name suggests, CodeDay is attended by coders, but we welcome students of any skill level and we've found that students are often interested in making art, music, etc. for the games and apps. It's a lot of fun.

Congratulations to the Speech and Debate Team! On Saturday at Newton South, the team was 6th overall.  Sasha Rieser was first in novice extemporaneous, Jason Stein was first in novice oral interpretation. The multiple team of Senior Raza,  and juniors  Simone Hernandez, John Lively, Annie Stein, Hannah Warn, and Raza were third in  multiple. Simone  was also fifth in dramatic interpretation,  Abby Hynes and Maggie Lehman were seventh in duo.  Sara Habermas received honorable mention in poetry.  Public Forum Debate Team of Kelsey Rondini and Jack Warn went 4-1.

The Book Club is having a bake sale on Thursday, January 17. On Friday, they will be showing the movie The Perks of Being a Wallflower the next day in the school library after school- at about 3:00. Congratulations to the Speech and Debate team. Last Saturday at the Holly "The biggest  one day high school hosted  speech tournament east of the Mississippi", Needham finished 4th overall. Abby Hynes participated in the panthalon, delivering thirteen speeches for a total of approximately two hours-without losing her voice. Abby and partner Maggie Lehman were 5th in duo, Abby 7th in poetry reading. Jason Stein was first out of eighty-four in novice reading, Annie Stein was 4th in oratory, Sasha Rieser was 3rd  in novice extemp, Kelsey Rondini  came in 6th in varsity extemp.Lilli Koplan came in 6th in children's literature. Annie Stein, along with Simone Hernandez, John Lively, Shayan Raza, Hannah Warn, was 5th in multiple reading.

The Plugged In Band Program is offering a 2-day songwriting workshop for youth ages 10-18 on December 29 & 30.  All skill levels are welcome.  Songwriting experience is not required.  For more information, please visit www.pluggedinband.org.

On this day in history, in 1863 – United States President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed November 26 as a national Thanksgiving Day, to be celebrated annually on the final Thursday of November. Following the Franksgiving controversy from 1939 to 1941, it has been observed on the fourth Thursday in 1942 and subsequent years.  Franksgiving is a portmanteau of "Franklin" and "Thanksgiving", coined by Atlantic City mayor Thomas D. Taggart, Jr. to describe the American Thanksgiving holiday from 1939 to 1941.In 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving one week earlier than normal, believing that doing so would help bolster retail sales during one of the final years of the Great Depression. This led to much upheaval and protest, causing some to deride the holiday as Franksgiving.

The 2nd annual bonfire is today in the upper lot! Starting around 5:30 - the bonfire will be a celebration preparing for the Thanksgiving Day Game followed by an event in the cafeteria for all including live music, food, and activities. Zachary Lu was 16th place speaker and 17th overall in Lincoln-Douglas Debate at the Glenbrook Invitational in Illinois.

Take Back the Night will take place tonight,  November 15, from 6 PM - 9 PM in the Needham High School cafeteria as we spread awareness about domestic violence and listen to survivors share their stories. The mission of take Back the Night is to end domestic violence in our community and provide a voice for those who do not have one.There will be food, guest speakers, door prizes and more! Everyone is invited to attend this event!

Brave the first snowstorm of the year and come to the Fall Band Concert tonight at 7 PM in the HS Auditorium.  The Jazz Ensemble, Concert and Symphonic Bands have prepared a great program of music and would love to have faculty, staff, and students come hear them.  Also, congratulations to Cole Fayemi for the honor of being selected for the National Association for Music Education All-Eastern Orchestra on tuba in April.

MOCK ELECTION RESULTS:  Thank you to the 914 NHS students that participated in our NHS Mock Election yesterday!  This was an increase of 68 students from our 2016 Mock Election.  In results that were well aligned with Town and State Elections yesterday, NHS students gave strong majority victories in the following races:

NHS graduate Charlie Baker for Governor

Elizabeth Warren for US Senate

Maura Healey for Massachusetts Attorney General

On the Ballot Questions NHS students also strongly voted:

NO on mandated nurse staffing.

YES  for a Constitutional Amendment on the Citizens United decision.

YES to prohibit discrimination on the basis of gender identity.

In a tighter vote NHS students voted YES to provide funding for new Public Safety Building here in Needham.

Are you interested in current events, politics, international relations, or even just playing the role of other people and having fun discussions with your friends? Join the Model United Nations / Congress, a club where we take on the roles of different congresspeople, Senators, and U.N representatives and discuss issues and draft resolutions to fix them. You don’t have to be a foreign relations expert to join, people of all levels of knowledge and experience are welcome!  The club meets in room 423 after school this Tuesday. If you have any questions, you can ask Mr. Ames, Mr. Starr, or the club's President, Zachary Packard.

Congratulations to the speech and debate team. At Yale University last weekend junior Zachary Lu was 17th in Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Thirty-one states attended the tournament.

On this day in history, in 1984 – Dwight Gooden set the baseball record for strikeouts in a season by a rookie with 246, previously set by Herb Score in 1954. Gooden's 276 strikeouts that season, pitched in 218 innings, set the current record.

Two aircraft crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City, a third crashed into The Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia, and a fourth into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
