When it comes to rice, I'm a lover. I LOVE RICE! Every meal possible, morning, noon and night, must include rice! From as a child, rice would sometimes be the only food I wanted on my plate. Rice made me feel good, gave me the quickest energy in the morning. So when I came across a video on youtube of real-life Rapunzels in China using rice water for their super long hair, I was intrigued. (see video here: )

After watching that video, I began my research on using rice water for my hair, and its incredible to discover the many benefits including packed vitamins and minerals in this grain that your hair thrives on and also your skin. It has worked for me!

Let's take a deeper look at the benefits of rice and rice water and how you can implement it into your daily beauty regimen.

Rice, especially organic rice, including brown rice, wild rice, red rice, are packed with antioxidants, vitamins B1, B3, C, E, K, Omega 3 and 6, also minerals containing manganese, selenium, magnesium, copper, which assist in tightening the skin, shrinkage of open pores on the face, plus restores properties in the hair to improve elasticity and condition.

As rice water, its an Inositol, a carbohydrate that can repair damaged hair, and protect it from future damage, especially heat damage.

When the rice water is fermented it will carry amino acids that help in strengthening  the hair roots and scalp, it will also smooth hair surface, giving it a beautiful natural shine and growth. Also, rice water can prevent graying of hair. On the face and skin, rice water can help heal acne, fine lines, scars and reduce redness, inflammation on the skin. According to dermatologists, rice water will heal dead cells in eczema. It promotes skin cell growth - yes an anti-aging agent, slowing down the aging process and  it stimulates blood flow, attaining flawless, soft skin.

How To Use Rice Water

  1. Shampoo- You can use as a Pre-poo or shampoo. Use about ¼ cup of rice water and add ½ cup of water to it. ( rice water is strong, so you want to dilute it a bit before applying). Then massage into your hair and scalp. Rinse.
  1. You can also take your favourite organic shampoo and add 1 to 2 tablespoons to your rice water. Mix together in a bowl or jug and pour onto hair, bit by bit, and massage into your hair. Rinse.

  1. Conditioner: You can use rice water as a conditioner. Take about 2 to 3 cups of rice water, dilute by adding about 1 cup of water, and pour bit by bit and massage into hair. Then rinse.
  1. You can also take your favourite organic conditioner, add ½ cup of conditioner to your rice water mix above, mix well, and pour onto hair. Massage. Then rinse.

  1. Leave-In Conditioner/ Styling Product: I use it as a daily leave-in on my hair. It's simple, pour your rice water into a spray bottle, and add few drops of your favourite essential oil, such as lavender, lemon, peppermint, clary sage, tea tree, or rosemary oil. Shake and spritz on to hair and scalp, massage, and continue styling your hair.
  2. Skin Beauty:  Pour rice water into a spray bottle, add a few drops of rose oil, or ¼ cup of rose water. Then add ¼ to ½ cup of water to dilute. Shake together. Spritz face after doing your normal face cleanse. Let dry. Then moisturize. You can also use this at night before going to bed. It will give you a glow next day, clearing the skin of toxins, and improve the appearance of the skin.  
  3. I recommend using any of the above methods for 14 days to see a full improvement. Make sure to refrigerate your rice water because as it ferments it will smell. Use it within 5 days and make a fresh batch weekly or bi weekly, depending on how often you wash your hair.

How To Make Rice Water

I included a video for you to see how easy it is to make rice water at home. Take a look and just follow the instructions below. I include 2 ways of making Rice Water.


1 cup rice

2 - 3 cups water



Fresh lemon, lime or orange peel

  1. Add rice to a bowl and wash thoroughly
  2. In a clean bowl, add the washed rice, and your water. Let sit for 2 hours in room temperature.
  3. Pour rice mixture into pot and boil for 15 minutes with lid on top on low-medium heat.
  4. Strain boiled rice into a bowl.
  5. Let cool in room temp. For 24 hours
  6. Next day, pour the the rice water into a pan/pot and boil for 5 minutes.
  7. Take off stove, add your lemon/ lime/ orange peel or you can add your favourite essential oil.
  8. Let cool in room temp. Pour into jar or spray bottle.
  9. Then place in refrigerator until ready to use.  

Another way to make rice water (shorter version)

1 cup rice

2- 3 cups water


  1. Wash rice thoroughly
  2. Scoop washed rice into jar
  3. Pour 2 - 3 cups of water in jar
  4. Let sit in room temp for 24 hours covered with lid.
  5. Next day, pour the rice water into a jar or spray bottle. Add your favourite essential oil. Shake well.
  6. Discard the rice.
  7. Place jar or bottle in refrigerator until ready to use.
