On Saturday, September 22nd, 8th Grade cellist from Andrew Jackson Middle School, Luke Benfield, participated in the 39th annual SC Cello Choir at Bob Jones University.  This weekend event is hosted by the South Carolina Chapter of the American String Teachers Association.  This celebration of only cellist brought together over 150 musicians from across South Carolina from Lexington to Charleston and of course Kershaw!

The conductor and clinician for the SC Cello Choir was Mr. Michael Haber, who is a retired cello professor from the University of Akron in Ohio.  Music pieces on the concert included works by Renaissance Era composer Giovanni Battista Vitali, Classical Era composer Ludwig van Beethoven, and Romantic Era composer Hector Berlioz.  Luke began rehearsing the music in the morning at 9 am and performed on the Gala concert at 5 pm to a standing ovation.

During the afternoon, Luke participated in a cello technique class with Dr. Richard Thomas, cello professor from Presbyterian College.  The class expanded techniques for bowing and also for the left-hand that will allow for increased strength and ability.  At the end of the session, Dr. Thomas played a demonstration piece that showed the full range of possibilities for the cello.

Congratulations to 8th grade cellist, Luke Benfield for representing Andrew Jackson Middle School at the South Carolina Cello Choir!  If you would like to hear part of the concert performance, here (https://www.screencast.com/t/eRFxYCKJ3Eoe) is a link.
