Host a postcard-writing party to support the SCA!

potlucknation.com/news/2017/3/8/how-to-throw-a-postcard-writing-party

1. Invite others to come: Contact friends or post on Facebook. Explain the purpose of the party and why sending postcards is important now (because the SCA needs to get out of committee before February 7). Your invite does not have to be as fancy as the one below!

2. Gather supplies - postcards (index cards are fine or you can purchase SCA postcards from Paradise Copy), pens, food/drink - that’s it!

3. Find your legislators’ contact info – malegislature.gov/Search/FindMyLegislator

You have a state representative and a state senator. Check how supportive your legislators are on the issue - have they co-sponsored the SCA?

See “legislative sponsors” at the bottom of this site: miracoalition.org/safe-communities

4. Thank them if they have supported the bill. Urge them to pressure the committee to report favorably and bring the bill out of committee to a vote.

Dear ________________,

The Safe Communities Act protects the civil rights, safety and well-being of all residents, and it is essential that this legislation be reported favorably out of committee. As your constituent, I urge you to speak with the Chairmen of the Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security to assist in moving this legislation forward.  It is time to do what is best for Massachusetts' communities.

Thank you,

[Sign your name and add your address or zip code]

5. Mail the postcards as soon as possible!

Host a phone-banking party to support the SCA!

1. Invite others to come: Contact friends or post on Facebook. Explain the purpose of the party and why making phone-calls is important now (the SCA needs to be out of committee by Feb 7).

2. Tell friends to bring fully charged phones. Food and drink can help!

4. If they already support the SCA, call and thank them, and then urge them to pressure the committee to report favorably and bring the bill out of committee to a vote.

Script: “I’m calling in support of the Safe Communities Act. As your constituent, I urge you to speak with the Chairmen of the Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security to assist in moving this legislation forward. The SCA protects the civil rights, safety and well-being of all residents, and it is essential that this legislation be reported favorably out of committee.”

Note: It is OK to call before 9 or after 5 and to leave a voice message. You may have to do some extra navigating to end up in the correct mailbox.

5. After you’ve called your rep and your senator, it is time to phone-bank! Two options:

  1. “Friend-banking” is where everyone texts their friends and asks them to call their legislators. Here’s a script you can text:
Hi ______! How are you? I’ve been fighting for a bill in the MA legislature called the Safe Communities Act - it directs state and local police not to detain anyone based solely on their immigration status. Can you call your reps and ask them to help get this bill on the floor for debate and vote? You can find their numbers here: malegislature.gov/search/findmylegislator. Let me know if you have any questions! And if you make the calls, let me know how it went!

  1. Call other friendly activists in the state thanks to Progressive Massachusetts’ call list.
