I am so upset. I searched the Internet for ASL dictionaries and found three. In each dictionary, I looked up gender neutral pronouns, meaning pronouns without a gender. In each dictionary, I typed the following: zie, eir, tem, vers, emself, and others.
I learned that ASL and the Deaf community are behind the times.
The hearing world has gender neutral pronouns, but Deaf culture, ASL, and ASL dictionaries don’t. ASL dictionaries need signs for zie, sie, ey, vis, tem, and the others.
The Deaf community needs a law. I encourage a law that forces ASL dictionaries to include gender neutral pronouns. The Deaf community has disrespected the LGBTQ+ community. The Deaf community has continued to use pronouns such as he, she, you, them, himself. I’m sick of it!
We must demand that the Deaf community use our pronouns. We need a law to make this happen. Below is a link to a petition. We need a law. If enough people sign, the ASL dictionary pronoun law will appear on the 2022 ballot. I encourage you to sign it.
