How You Can Get Involved…

• Keep in touch with your child’s teachers through telephone, conversations, or emails.
• Participate in school-based events that are intended for attendance of all families.
• Serve as a role model for your child showing him/her that you support the progress being made in school.
• Keep your child’s teacher informed about events in your child’s life that may affect his/her performance in school.
• Support your child’s extracurricular activities.
• Discuss ideas for parent involvement with your child’s teacher and family engagement coordinator.
• Get involved in the governance of the school and have a voice.
• Ask your child about their day at school and if he/she has any homework to complete.
• Attend monthly meetings scheduled for mornings and afternoons to discuss what all stakeholders can do to plan, evaluate, and improve our Title I program.

Parents, Alumni, Community for Kids (P.A.C.K.)

The parent/family booster club at PMS. It is comprised of parents, alumni, and community members who want to work together for the betterment of our kids at PMS. The club is actively seeking members who have what is best for the students at PMS at heart. We encourage all our parents and families to join the booster club. There is a $5.oo membership fee with all the proceeds being used to make PMS the best possible school for students, teachers, families, and the community.

Compacts are included in the registration packet provided at registration. The compact states the goals and responsibilities of students, parents, and schools.

What is Title I?

Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) provides financial assistance to states and school districts to meet the needs of educationally at-risk students. The goal of Title I is to provide extra instructional services and activities which support students identified as failing or most at risk of failing the state’s challenging performance standards in mathematics, reading, and writing.

How does Title I Work?

The Federal Government provides funding to states each year for Title I. To get the funds, each state must submit a plan describing:

• What all children are expected to know and be able to do.
• The high-quality standards of performance that all children are expected to meet.
• Ways to measure progress.

Title I serves children through school wide programs. Schools with 40% or more of children from low-income families can develop school wide Title I programs to serve all students. School wide programs can combine Title I funds with federal, state, and local funds to improve school programs. Title I programs generally offer:

• Smaller classes or special instructional classes.
• Additional teachers and assistants.
• Additional training for school staff.
• A variety of teaching methods and materials.
• Counseling and mentoring.

Your Rights

Under the law, parents and families must:

• Be included in Title I budget decision-making and the development of a parent and family engagement policy that is distributed to all parents/guardians and the community.
• Be involved in the planning and implementation of parent and family engagement programs by attending the annual meeting and other scheduled meetings throughout the year.
• Receive materials and training for parents and staff to foster greater family engagement.
• Have the opportunity to jointly develop, with school staff, a school-home compact that outlines how parents, the entire school staff, and students will share the responsibility for improved student academic achievement.

Plantersville Middle School (PMS) is a Schoolwide Title I school. Our teachers use the Mississippi College and Career Ready Standards from the Mississippi Department of Education, along with the pacing guides and curriculum of the Lee County School District to prepare our students to be successful on the ELS assessments used by the district to progress monitor our students, as well as the Mississippi Academic Assessment Program (MAAP) end-of-year assessments. PMS students are expected to show one level growth from the previous year’s MAAP assessments.
