Tome Book Award Character Yearbook Superlative

Competition Instructions

Objective: Digitally create a superlative yearbook spread  from the imaginary school yearbook of a character in a book on the current Tome Book Award list for your grade level.

Learning Targets:

• This activity encourages students to analyze the themes & plot of the book in order to create a yearbook spread that accurately represents the experiences, thoughts, and feelings of the character.
• Through designing a visual yearbook spread students can deepen their understanding of the tone and mood of the book, as these elements are key in visual storytelling.
• By focusing on elements like theme and setting, students can enhance their comprehension of how these literary components contribute to the overall impact of a story and its characters.
• By using inspiration from the story itself, students can learn how to translate abstract concepts into visual imagery.

Final Product Guidelines:

• Should be a digital document created in Canva, Adobe or a similar desktop publishing software.
• Yearbook superlative spread must be saved as .jpg or .png file.
• Cover page document must be saved as a PDF
• Must clearly be the student’s own original work - NO AI ALLOWED.
• All text should be excellently written with excellent grammar, spelling, & mechanics.
• Project should be based on a book on the current Tome Book Award list for the student’s chapter level.
• Cover Page document should include:

• Student’s name
• Student’s school name
• Student’s grade
• Image of book cover
• Brief description of the plot of the book - no spoilers.
• 200-400 word description of the process the student used to plan, design, and create the yearbook superlative page.

• What elements of the story did you want the page to reflect and why?
• How does the yearbook superlative award and overall page reflect elements from the character’s experience in the story - setting, specific scenes, likes, dislikes, other characters, thoughts, strengths, weaknesses, etc.
• How did you decide on the visual elements for the page?
• What was your artistic process for creating the page?

• Yearbook superlative spread guidelines:

• Include color images
• Include a spread, or layout, similar to a yearbook superlative page (may be one page layout OR two page book spread layout)
• Include Title of book
• Include Author of book
• May include stock images (with proper citation) or original artwork
• Images & content should be school-appropriate (no profanity, nudity, illegal substances, etc.)
• Title of TWO to FIVE yearbook superlatives that a single character, a duo, or group of characters from the book has been awarded (Ex. Most likely to succeed, best friends, most likely to topple an evil regime, best under pressure, etc)
• Name of characters being awarded the superlative
• A quote from the character(s) taken from the book.
• A 50-150 word interview with at least two superlatives winning character(s) answering the question, “What does receiving this award mean to you?”

Scoring Rubric

Student should self-assess their work using the following scoring rubric before submission.

Failure to meet all rubric requirements will result in loss of points.

Please submit your entry as a multi-page PDF.

• Page 1 should be the cover page with the required cover page information
• Page 2 (and additional pages, if applicable) should contain the entry itself.
• Tools like Canva make it easy to create a PDF with a proper cover page followed by graphic design picture page(s).

Meeting the basic requirements of a criteria does not guarantee full points; higher scores are awarded for more fully addressing the criteria and demonstrating higher quality of work.
