How to Seek Mental Health Services

Identify What Insurance Your Child Has or Needs

The type, provider, and cost of mental health treatment may be determined by the child/family’s medical insurance.

If your child has:

Outpatient Counseling Cheat Sheet

Counseling sessions provided by the school counselor (guidance counselor) are brief and solution-focused in nature. School counseling services are not a substitute for therapy. If you are interested in seeking community-based outpatient therapy for your child, here are some helpful tips.

Your Insurance - Outpatient counselors/therapists bill your insurance. When you call, make sure to ask them to check your insurance to see if they are a match for you and how much your copay will be. If you cannot afford the fees or have no insurance, ask them if they have a sliding scale or offer any pro bono work.

Intake Session - Most agencies will first schedule you for an intake. This is where they will meet with you to discuss concerns and collect a detailed history of the child/family. This may or may not be with the actual therapist you get.

All About the Match - Success in therapy is heavily reliant on finding a good match. If your child doesn’t like and trust the therapist after giving them a good try, we suggest asking for a new therapist and/or finding a new agency.

Types of Mental Health Services and Levels of Care

Student Assistance Program (SAP) - Assists school personnel to identify issues including substance use concerns and mental health issues which pose a barrier to a student’s success. Contact the school counselor (guidance counselor) at your child’s school if you would like your child to be assessed by the SAP liaison or participate in SAP services. Please note - This service is not billed to your insurance.

Case Management (CM) - A mental health professional that can help you locate and coordinate the necessary services for your child and family. Service Access and Case Management (SAM) can determine eligibility for case management services and help you find a case management agency. Their phone number is 610-236-0530.

School-Based - The school district contracts licensed therapists through Concern Counseling, who come into the school and meet with students to provide one on one therapeutic services during the school day. If you are interested in school-based therapeutic services, please contact your child’s school counselor (guidance counselor). The cost associated with this service is billed through your insurance.

Outpatient (OP) - Mental health or substance use treatment that can include individual, family, group therapy, psychiatric evaluations, and medication management. This service is available at community agencies. This usually occurs once weekly or once bi-weekly.

Intensive Outpatient (IOP) - Treatment programs used to address addiction, depression, eating disorders, and other dependencies that do not require detoxification or around-the-clock supervision. Patients can continue living their day-to-day lives while receiving the level of treatment they need. This service is usually a step down from partial hospitalization. The service consists of two to three sessions a week. Each session is approximately two to three hours.

Intensive Behavioral Health Services (IBHS) (Wrap-Around) - You have to have Medical Assistance and/or Medical Assistance with Private Insurance to receive IBHS.  Mental health services are provided in home and community settings for children. These services include 3 components:

  1. Behavioral Specialist Consultant (BSC) - trained psychologists or social workers who perform brief behavioral observations and assessments to assist in making a behavioral management plan.
  2. Mobile Therapist (MT) - provides individual and family therapy in your home or community setting.
  3. Therapeutic Staff Support (TSS) - works with the BSC to provide individual therapeutic support to a child with behavioral problems.
  1. Provides one-to-one interventions with the child to help them meet their treatment goals.
  2. Helps family and caregivers to develop skills needed to manage their child’s behavior.

Family-Based Mental Health Services - You have to have Medical Assistance and/or Medical Assistance with Private Insurance to receive Family-Based Services. Voluntary mental health services for children and teenagers with a serious emotional or behavioral disorder, and their families. These intensive services occur in the home setting and are meant to strengthen the family’s ability to care for their child in the home rather than a hospital setting. Services provided include family therapy, case management, emergency crisis intervention, and other family support services. Family-based teams are available 24/7 and can help families access respite services, as needed.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) - Short-term mental health services provided at a health care facility on an outpatient basis that typically occurs every weekday for several hours a day. Educational instruction is provided at most Partial Hospital programs.

Inpatient Hospitalization - An overnight or longer stay in a psychiatric hospital or psychiatric unit of a general hospital. This treatment occurs when the child is in an acute phase of a serious mental illness. The hospital stay will last as long as is needed to make sure the child is safe when he or she leaves the hospital. Inpatient Substance Use Treatment - 28-day stay in a substance use treatment center.

Residential Treatment Facility (RTF) - Time-limited, out-of-home mental health treatment services for children with severe emotional and behavioral needs. Doctors, therapists, social workers, and childcare workers give 24-hour care and treatment at a healthcare facility. RTF recommendations and referrals come from licensed mental health and medical professional treatment teams.
