Hello Wangenheim Families,

This is VP Susan Kent to give you some more information.  Tomorrow is our first minimum day of the year.  All students will be going to their periods 1,3,5 classes and there is no advisory.  Thursday is our 2nd minimum day and students will be going to their period 2.4,6 classes and they will not be going to the advisory.  All students will leave campus at 12:18 pm after lunch.  We do need your help.  Please complete the COVID 19 and LCFF if you have not done so.  Thank you to all those that turned it in.  We need your help with students getting to school on time and not being late to their 7:30 am class.  Please help and our teachers and staff greatly appreciate your support.  I am mistaken and it is Thursday, not Wednesday that we have our KONA ice fundraiser during lunch.  It will be a hot day and it will be awesome to have something cold in your tummy.  Thank you for listening!

Hello Wangenheim Families,

As you may know, Wangenheim receives supplemental funding as a Title I school. In order to be identified as a Title I school, we rely on the "LCFF Data Collection" every year (previously, Free/Reduced Lunch Applications were used to determine eligibility), this is where you come in. As the parent/guardian of a Wildcat, we need your help!

Please be sure to login to PowerSchool Parent Portal (you cannot use the Student Portal for this task - only Parent Portal) and follow these directions:

Click on the LCFF icon near the bottom of the navigation menu on the left side of the screen.

Click on the dropdown to select the number of people living in your home.

Select the appropriate income amount for the household.

Click the checkbox to certify the information.

Click submit

Please note: Regardless of your income, the LCFF form must be completed by all families by Friday, September 17. This information helps to ensure Wangenheim receives all the state funding we are entitled to. Your answers are confidential and will not viewed by our personnel. Thank you for your support.

Here is a link to our newsletter if that is easier:  ttps://www.smore.com/9pm6q

If you need help accessing or creating a PowerSchool Parent Portal account, please email Annette Stevens, astevens@sandi.net.

Did you know there is no school on Monday? Labor Day is a federal holiday in the United States celebrated on the first Monday in September in any given year to honor and recognize the American labor movement and the works and contributions of laborers to the development and achievements of the United States.

Tomorrow is COVID testing day at Wangenheim from 12-3,

All families are now required to make a choice on Covid testing at the start of the new school year. Every family must complete the below form and submit their response online at this time. Free Covid testing in school not only helps prevent the spread of the virus but also helps more students stay in school and continue their education.

To opt-in for testing for your child, please complete the COVID-19 Testing Acknowledgement Form on PowerSchool. Please Note: A PowerSchool Username and Password will be required to complete this form. If you do not have the Access ID and Password for your student, please contact your school site’s office following the first day of school on August 30th.

If you prefer filling the form out on paper, please complete and turn it into your school's front office: English | Spanish | Tagalog | Vietnamese | Arabic | Somali | Swahili

See job aid (Spanish) or video below for instructions on how to complete the COVID-19 Testing Acknowledgement Form.

A gentle reminder:  Please help us help your student.  Please do not send text messages to your student during class time because the pings on the phone are disruptive.   Please remind your students to turn off their phones during school.  We always appreciate your help and support.

Good Evening Wildcat Parents and Families,

This is VP Susan Kent welcoming new and returning Wildcats to the start of a new school year!  Here is the joke of the week:

What did one pencil say to the other on the first day of school?

Looking sharp!

We hope you are excited and ready to make the most of your middle school experience.  We are thrilled that you will be part of our Wangenheim Wildcat family.  To set yourself up for success, please review the latest information below, visit  Wangenheim school website, get connected with PTSA, and attend one or more of the upcoming events.  We are looking forward to meeting all of you in person and having a great school year.

This email is to provide answers to some of your questions with the most up-to-date information regarding the opening of the school. This information is extensive and there will be more as we get closer to the start of the school year. Our current plans are based on the most up-to-date health and safety guidelines and our commitment to ensure a safe opening while generating a positive and energetic start to the school year for our students.

Safe School Opening- As conditions with COVID-19 continue to change and evolve, these plans may change. The most recent district communication about the health and safety guidelines can be found in this communication from the San Diego Unified School District on August 14th. As of now, all students will be required to wear face masks while indoors at Wangenheim, and masks are optional outdoors.

The first day of school is Monday, August 30, 2021. It is recommended that students arrive between 7:00-7:25 am to pick up their finalized student schedule. Tables will be set up outside the counseling/main office by grade level/last name alpha.

The first period starts at 7:30 am, and the last period ends at 2:25 pm.  The school parking lots are still inaccessible to parent parking.  Therefore, there will be no student drop-off or pick-up in the main parking lot. Student drop-off is on Black Mountain Road on the street.  At the Dunholme entrance off Gold Coast Drive, all drop-offs will be at Westchester.   Students may ride bikes, scooters, skateboards, etc., provided they meet the law by wearing a helmet.  A bike rack, scooter, and skateboard stands are available to lock these items.

When will students receive their class schedules?

Tentative schedules will be given during orientation. Some changes may still occur before the final schedules are ready on the first day of school.

How do I make changes to my student’s schedule?

If there is a mistake on the schedule (repeated classes, missing a class, hole in the schedule, wrong grade level, etc.) you can contact your student’s counselor via email and we will correct it and get back to you. Additionally, students can come to the counseling office during the period of the error on day one.

If requesting a schedule change for any other reason (wanting a different lunch, changing minds about elective, change in Academic load), these changes are typically not made as it can often involve multiple courses needing to be changed. However, a student can complete a Schedule Change Request form to discuss the request. These forms will be in the main office during the first few weeks of school and returned to the counseling office. Counselors will review and make changes, if appropriate. Requests for teacher changes are not made.

Registration

Do I need to come to school to make sure my child is registered?

If your child finished school at any of the feeder schools Ericson, Hage, Mason, or Walker last year, and you filled out and returned the registration packet, then you are all set, and no further action is required. If not, please stop by the office to pick up the GREEN registration form and provide proof of address.  However, if you just moved into the neighborhood, you will need to visit our main office and register your child.

HEALTH & SAFETY

Will students have to complete the daily health screener like last year?

All students will need to complete the screener at home every day to determine if they should come to school.  However, students will not be required to show proof of the screener at school.

What if my student fails the screener and/or has COVID symptoms?

Keep your student home and contact the school nursing office, 619.605.2250 ext. 3050 and 3051.  We will be following the San Diego County Office of Education’s Decision Tree.  Generally, students will be required to stay home for ten days from symptom onset or positive test date.  If a student has proof of a negative test, they may return after 24 hours if symptoms improve and they are vaccinated.  If your child has a chronic illness that has COVID-like symptoms, contact the school nurse for assistance. (These policies are subject to change.  Please review the Decision Tree for more details.)

Will students be required to wear a mask at school?

Yes.  Currently, masks are required indoors at all times for all staff and students.  Masks may be removed outdoors only.

Will students be required to social distance indoors and out?

The latest public health guidance recommends physical distancing when possible, but it is not required when other prevention measures are in place to ensure safety.  Students should practice social distancing when outdoors with masks off on campus.

Can my student choose to Zoom into classes this year?

Only students that selected the virtual option may Zoom into classes.  All students who chose to live must attend school in person and will return to a normal attendance-taking policy.

Is Tdap a required immunization?

Tdap Immunization Requirement- 7th Grade The California law requires that students entering 7th through 12th grades in the 2021-22 school year must be immunized with pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine booster called Tdap before they can start school. Parents must provide proof of immunization or a Medical Exemption statement before the first day of school on August 30th. This requirement affects all students – current, new, and transfers – in public and private schools.

PE

Will I be able to purchase PE clothes after orientation?

PE classes will not suit up the first two weeks of school.  The PTSA will be available to purchase PE clothes before and after school the first two weeks(August 31-September 1 and September 7-8).  The cost is $25.00 (cash, check, or debit/credit card).

Can students buy PE clothes other than the        ones sold at        school?

Yes, any gray t-shirt        and navy athletic shorts will be accepted.  Students will be        “dressing out” for PE this year and participating        in the        fields.

TECHNOLOGY

When and where can I turn in books or computers from my old school?

You can drop off library books, textbooks, and computers in the main office or the library.  6th graders will be issued a new device.

What if my student has forgotten his Student ID and/or password?

Their teacher should be able to help them retrieve this information.  You can also contact the main office.

Will I get a new Chromebook for the school year?

Every student will need a school-issued device this school year.  Personal computers may be used at home but not at school.  All 7th and 8th-grade students will keep the computer they already have.  All 6th-grade students will exchange their current device during orientation or the first week of school for a new model.   Upgrades will happen again in 9th grade for all students.  Try these basic tips before contacting support.

What do I do if my student’s computer isn’t working properly?

Please try these basic tips.  If you are still having issues, contact Mark McGee, Network Technician, Room 504.

What is ParentPortal?

Parent Portal is a program designed for parents to monitor their students’ progress and attendance through Powerschool. Powerschool displays all of your students’ records, current grades, and attendance.

Directions for setting up your PowerSchool Parent Portal please contact Annette Stevens (astevens@sandi.net) to obtain your access ID and if you have any questions.

Do I need to sign up again for ParentPortal?

No, your ParentPortal follows your student.  You will only need to sign up once.

SUPPLIES

When will students receive textbooks?

The majority of our textbooks are available online.  If a student needs/wants a physical copy of textbooks, please check out from the library.

When will students receive their photo identification cards?

School pictures will be taken, and IDs issued on September 2nd during PE classes. In addition, there will be a picture make-up day (TBD)  for those students who miss it.  Students will be charged $5.00 for replacement IDs.

What are the suggested school supplies?

We recommend students attend the first day with something to write on and write with. They also need to bring their computer (fully charged). Teachers will let them know of any specific suggestions for their class on the first few days. Typical supplies include 70-page spiral notebooks, lined loose-leaf paper, pencils, pens, and highlighters.

Will students have access to lockers?

The only lockers available are for PE clothes in the locker rooms.  Students bring required materials daily in backpacks (rolling is acceptable).

PRIMETIME

FOOD SERVICES

Will my student need to buy or bring lunch to school?

Ready-to-eat, hot lunch will be available for all students free of charge this year.  Students will pick up meals in the cafeteria or café carts on campus. PINs will not be needed at this time but may be in the future.  Students are welcome to bring additional items or pack their lunch.  Microwaves are not available. Please go to Food Services for additional information.

Will breakfast or additional meals be available?

Take-home meal bags will be available to students as they depart for the day.  These take-home meal bags will include breakfast for the next day (if not offered before school), evening meals, and meals for the weekend. Please go to Food Services for additional information.

GRADING

Are students still being “held harmless” with grading?

Students will be held accountable for their work just as they were before Distance Learning.  The district has adopted and continues to transition toward Standards-Based Grading and students will be assigned grades based on their proficiency toward content standards in their classes.

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT

Where can students find a list of student clubs?

We are in the process of updating student clubs. Listen for new information during morning announcements through the first month as clubs are determined by student/staff interest and are not always the same.

How will I know what is happening at Wangenheim Middle School?

Please visit our website regularly, our newsletter, and expect a message from the administration, voicemail, and email every Sunday 5:30-6:00 pm with all the latest news. That means it is essential to keep your contact information up to date and complete. Go to ParentPortal or contact our main office if you need to update any information from last year.
