Media Form | Duration: 4.31 | Ratio % of Performance to Narrative : 90/10
Theme / subject matter: | At the start of the song the lead singer walks on stage on his own and starts playing music. Then a few seconds later the rest of the band follow on behind him and start to play this shows he is the leader. As they all starter to play the song a riot police man walk towards then and waits by a line. As the song progresses my and more riot people join him on the line facing the band. The lyrics in the chorus are “What if I say I'm not like the others? What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays? You're the pretender What if I say I will never surrender?” this is showing to the audience that the band will not back down from the riot men and keep playing. As the song quiets down before it goes into the last chorus the riot men start to charge at the band. When the music picks up tone again the huge red screen behind the band blows up showing they are fighting back at them. The main subject matter of the song is rebellion and standing up.
Any cultural competence needed to make intertextual references? | Do you need to appreciate other ‘texts’/styles/media to get the music video? From watching the music video you straight away get a basic understanding of what is happening and the audience should easily too.
Generic Features The conventional ingredients | Look of the video/star: How is it instantly recognisable as a pop/rock video? - The Video is recognisable as a rock song from the instruments the band are playing. It is the typical instruments that they would use like drums lead guitar and bass guitar.
Sound of the music: How do you know it is a rock/pop/reggae music video? - You can tell the music is rock by the way it flows. At the start it is a steady quite song then it builds up to the chorus were it gets loud and builds up to more of a rock song with the guitar and drums being the loudest parts of the band with a very distinctive beat .
Narrative Analysis | ...illustration Does it illustrate the song? ...amplification : Does it add another layer of meaning to the song? ...disjunction Does it seem to work in juxtaposition to the song? | What does this contribute to your understanding? The music video is solely based around the bands performance and has a small narrative around it of the riot people. I think the lyrics in the song really tell the real story of the song. It definitely illustrates the song as the band are part of the narrative of the song as the lyrics are telling the roait people they will not give in.
What is the relationship between the narrative and star? | Is the artist in the narrative? What does it say about what matters to them? I think the singer in the band is a key part of the narrative in the song. When he is singing the song you can see the anger in the way he sings as if he means it and is something that has effected him or the band in the past The riot people might be represented as not just police but all the people in life that have got him down and said he cant do something and what him to stop like a riot person would do but he is not listening and doing what he wants to do and not listen to them. It reminds me of someone protesting in front of the police but instead of using sign he is use his voice and the band around him to get his message across.
Technical Conventions | Visual Rhythm
Camera Movement and Cutting Speed - edit to the beat? transitions/camera angles/camera movement/camera framing. At the start of the video there is an extreme long shot and the lead singer walking in. This shows the audience the space around them and how big the area is it also very plane making them focus on him more. Then rest of band joins him but with a lot closer shots but from a low angle showing the power they have. As the song progresses and the riot people come out they are lost of fast ,quick pan shots between the band and them. This helps build up tension especially as the song builds up too. Towards the end of the song where the music climates the song slows down and the riot men start running at the band but in slow motion in time with the music to give more effect of th size of them and charging at the band.
Representation of The Star
What ideas are communicated about the star and how are these communicated through camera, editing and mise-en-scene? When the star first walks on to the set he walks to the microphone with a big stride and at peace showing he is there to get something done. Before he starts to play he tightens a bandages on his hand this signifies to the audience that he is about to get into a fight and ready to take on anyone. Throughout the song he plays the guitar with real anger and enthusiasm. When the camera gets a close up shot of him singing he is practically shouting like a barking dog . This is showing his anger towards the riot people or the audience.
Aesthetics | |||||
How is the video designed to look visually striking? MES/Post production Throughout the music video lots of different effects are used are used to show effects of many things like the band and the area around them. You could say that the area around the band is quite plain at the start of the video as its just them and the red board with the simple colour of black and whiter around it. One of the biggest most significant things used would be the prop of the massive red board behind the band. The colour of it signifies red and anger would could be the feelings of the band. When the riot people charge at the band the board blows up like they are fight back at them and it completely destroys the set showing the bands strength. The shots they get of this look really good and is one of the biggest parts of he video . |
