PTA News:

We have an important update on the fundraiser that we started last year called Changing the Face of West Jeff Middle School. Many of you know about this exciting project that will add landscaping, seating and outdoor learning spaces to the front of our school. We kicked this off last spring and are excited to announce that we will be moving forward with the groundbreaking this November! We will see the hardscaping and irrigation work this fall, followed by the planting and outdoor learning space next spring.

Thanks to Lisa Webb, a West Jeff family member, we have secured approximately $30,000 in donated materials. In addition, the district has added funding and secured a contractor to manage the project. In order to complete the design and provide outdoor learning space for our students we would like to raise $10,000 in additional funds. One of the ways you can support this initiative is to purchase a paver with your student's name on it. These pavers will be included in the new landscaping and are a great way to create a permanent remembrance of your student's time at West Jeff Middle School. Because the project is starting soon, you have just one week – until November 10 – to order your paver. You can also donate to this project on our website or by dropping a check off at the office. We are excited to be Changing the Face of West Jeff Middle School together!

PTA would love your support with several upcoming events. If you are interested in helping with any of these programs, please see the Volunteer Opportunities page, visit the PTA website, or contact PTA at wjmspta@gmail.com.

Thank you.

Social and Emotional Learning Update: This year Jefferson County Public Schools has recognized the importance of building social emotional skills specifically during the middle school years. Each middle school in the district now has a Social Emotional Learning Specialist assigned to their building; ours is David Fennimore. His work includes collaboration with staff to incorporate social emotional learning as part of their education. These lessons are delivered in academic classes as well as Advise. The goal of this program is to weave these social emotional skills into all aspects of their lives including academics.

This month we are working with students on the area of Relationship Skills in our social emotional learning program. We know that relationship skills tie directly into academic and social success and are a necessary tool to possess to achieve future goals.

All students will be discussing how to assess their relationships and what their role is within the relationship. They will be taught five critical elements to help maintain positive relationships: respect, responsibility, understanding, labor, and caring. Students will have the opportunity to work together and identify why each of these elements support healthy relationships. They will also have the opportunity to reflect on their own relationships and how these relationships impact their own lives.

Students are eager to participate in this learning and enjoy having the opportunity to talk about themselves and their life experiences. It is not uncommon for students to approach us at the end of a lesson to let us know they enjoyed the learning and are thankful that we spend the time to teach these skills in a fun and interactive way!

PTA News: There are plenty of slots open for bringing dinner in for teachers on Thursday for Parent-Teacher Conferences. Please visit wjms.us and click on Volunteers.

Students were given time to speak about relevant 8th grade behavior and situations that may make them “blow their top” and how to use their prefrontal cortex, the rational part of the brain, to calm the limbic system, the emotional part of the brain. Students enjoyed discussing situations that are meaningful and challenging to them.

Our 7th graders are beginning to dig in further to why social emotional learning is important for success in school, work, relationships, and life. They are also identifying SEL skills that are strengths for them and areas that they can improve upon.

Our 6th grade students are adjusting back to their routine here at West Jeff after a successful week of learning and using the Social and Emotional Learning competencies at Outdoor Lab. Direct, formalized instruction in Social Emotional Learning will begin next week!

Good evening, families of West Jefferson Middle School. This is your Weekly Wednesday Update for May 24th, 2017.

Early Release Day: May 25th is an early release day for 6th and 7th grade. School dismisses at 11:50 am. There are NO LUNCH SERVICES.

New website: West Jefferson Middle is getting a new website! Our existing URL, http://wjms.us/ , will take you to our new site after May 30th. (You can also bookmark http://westjeffms.jeffcopublicschools.org/.) You’ll notice that things look a little different and that some pages may have moved. Along with a modern design, our new website is mobile responsive, meets WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) 2.0, and has news and events that will feed into a district-wide mobile app that will be launched in time for Back to School 2017-18. The navigation menu items have become more standardized across the district, as well, to help our users—that’s you—be able to find information. As you are browsing, you may run across some issues or needed changes, despite our best efforts to prevent this. If you do, please send those to mbgutier@jeffco.k12.co.us so we can address them. Thanks for your patience as we continue to improve our digital presence!

PTA News:

We are excited to update you on the completion of the Changing the Face of West Jeff beautification initiative. Last fall we started with the installation of the benches, irrigation and hardscaping. This week, just in time for 8th grade continuation, the trees and shrubs were planted... and they look spectacular! This summer we will complete the project by adding the personalized pavers, outdoor learning area and tables near the front entryway of our school.

A huge thank you to Lisa Webb for her contribution of time as the designer and coordinator of this project. Her business, C&H Landscaping, secured thousands of dollars in donated materials and completed all of the beautiful landscaping for our students and staff.

We also want to thank each of the families and businesses that provided donations over the past three years. Thanks to you we, have forever "Changed the Face of West Jeff"!
