This week and last, we were very lucky to have 'Make Change' come into our PE lessons and provide adapted boxing, squash and wheelchair racing. It was great to see how we could adapt current practice further to provide inclusive sport for all. Next week we have Boccia and curling!” #make_inclusive

SIXTH FORM INDUCTION - 04 JULY - 05 JULY

As part of our drive to further improve Sixth Form standards and outcomes the Sixth Form induction will be taking place prior to the summer holiday period. It is essential that we do all that we can to ensure that our year 11 students are fully prepared to cope with the demands of post 16 qualification studies. It will take place on Thursday 4th and Friday 5th July. This coincides with the year 10 and year 12 work experience weeks

Those students who are planning to join our sixth form will be invited into school to experience a number of induction lessons for their chosen options, as well as providing an opportunity for the Sixth Form team to deliver essential presentations about sixth form expectations, procedures and opportunities.

In terms of organisation of the week, all students will attend 2 lessons for their 3 chosen courses. They will have the opportunity to try a 4th subject should they wish (this will hopefully ensure that we have limited requests to change courses in the initial stages of their year 12 studies and if there is a need to change, they may have already sampled another subject that interests them). Heads of Department will decide which members of staff are involved in preparing and delivering the induction lessons.

To facilitate this in terms of preparation, each department will be required to prepare 2 lessons for their respective subjects. Please remember, that this is an opportunity to ensure that those students who join you in September are as well prepared to meet the demands of your subject as possible.

Things to consider in terms of what you should deliver in these lessons:

  1. Course outlines / specifications / expectations.
  2. Essential baseline knowledge (opportunity to teach / reteach the foundational knowledge required)
  3. Subject Specific Skills required for success.
  4. Expectations and training of independent study skills useful for your subject area.
  5. Modelling of outstanding work
  6. Opportunity to sign post to additional pre-learning materials (summer preparation work)

Consider exactly what you would want the ideal starting point to be for a Sixth Former in your subject, you now have the opportunity to enable that to happen.

SIXTH FORM DRESS CODE

You will be aware that a consultation took place with reference to the introduction of a smart, formal dress code for our Sixth Form students. Following feedback from key stakeholders the decision has been made not to pursue the proposal. A number of concerns were raised, including the cost involved, lack of individuality and little evidence to suggest that it would result in improved outcomes. However, it is essential that students dress appropriately for the school environment and this has been reinforced to the students following the announcement of the decision made. As always, please refer any concerns about students attire to the sixth form team.
