*Additional Note on Marshall Premium Ferret Diet:
Since the majority of USA based ferrets originate from Marshall Ferret Farm -
this is most likely the food they imprinted on as kits. I recommend that people buy enough Marshall Premium Ferret Diet in order to do a proper/ gradual food transition from one food to another if you are planning to feed a different kibble (ferrets have very short & simple digestive systems that need this gradual transition period going from one food to another to help minimize digestive upset). There is more info below the charts on how to do a proper kibble transition, but basically you just start by adding about 10% of the new food to 90% old food and gradually increase the ratio of the new food every other day or so - as tolerated.

~Kibble transitioning~

It is VERY important to do a very gradual transition from one food to another. This is done by adding a tiny amount of new kibble to their old kibble, and GRADUALLY increasing the new kibbles over the course of about 2 weeks. The intestinal microflora in a Ferrets GI tract needs time to adjust to the addition of different ingredients. It is also advisable to only introduce one new food at a time to minimize bacterial overgrowth, and isolate any possible food sensitivity or allergy that may arise.

"Overseas" Food Chart links:

Additional Food Chart links:

Recommended Supplements:

  • Vivify (Totally Ferret) - Healthy omega rich fatty acid oil that is fish-free (great for ferrets that hate fish or have a sensitivity/ allergy to fish). Made with Emu oil, poultry fat and seed oil [olive oil]. Serving size for ferrets is about 1/8th teaspoon (or 0.6mL) per day (of all combined oils).

*NOTE - this supplement is safe to give to ferrets with chicken-protein allergy/ sensitivity (it is the chicken-protein that causes GI upset, not the fat)

*NOTE - this supplement can be given during seasonal shedding times to help prevent hairballs from forming in the GIT (hairballs can cause a deadly blockage/ obstruction).

  • Dr. Tim's:  Taurine Topper -Freeze-dried beef (heart, liver, tripe) with additional taurine and salmon oil. Supports healthy heart function & the immune system. Serving size for ferrets is about 1/8th teaspoon per day in/ over food.

!!! IMPORTANT  PSA!!!

—AVOID feeding your ferrets any foods that contain peas/chickpeas, lentils or beans (legumes)—These ingredients are linked to the development of bladder stones in ferrets.

***Bladder stones are extremely painful and are life-threatening in ferrets. In most cases bladder stones will require prompt (very expensive) surgery to remove them.***

—It is also strongly advised to choose recipes that use little-to-no plant-based proteins (also linked to crystals and bladder stones in ferrets); feed only LOW starch carbohydrate foods (carbs should be kept under 24%; ideally under 10% when possible).
