Worship and Liturgy of Release

Ever has it been that love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation. ― Kahlil Gibran

How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard. - A.A. Milne

Goodbyes are not forever, are not the end; it simply means I’ll miss you until we meet again. – Unknown

Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. – Jesus, John 14:1-3

Trinitarian Greeting

People:         Let us celebrate God’s gathering us together with the gift of our praise.

Leader:        God is about working things out, sometimes in surprising ways, for the good of all.

People:        Let us rejoice in God’s holy purposes with the exercise of our trust.

Leader:        Now, let us worship our amazing God.

All:                For God is here and in all creation, seeking the good of all.

Opening Hymn                        We Gather Together                  (verses 1 & 2)

We Gather Together to ask for God’s blessing

To turn to a wisdom surpassing our own

The powers that oppress us, now cease to distress us

Our God be present with us, and make your will known

Beside us to guides us, O God, we perceive you

Ordaining, maintaining the power of life

Yes, yours be the glory, let all tell the story.

Our God, be ever with us, in gladness and strife.

Prayer of Invocation

God, in these moments of worship, help us to understand what is going on in our lives and see your hand in it. May we be able to see where you have been at work, were you are currently working, and then, trust in the future and what you will do thru us.  Help us to feel your presence, to be filled with your love, and to be channels of your grace. This we pray, in Jesus name, Amen.

Joys and Concerns

Pastoral Prayer & Lord’s prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Call for the offering

Prayer of Dedication of Gifts and Self

Gracious God, I offer you thanksgiving and praise for the gift of your steadfast and eternal love, and your endless bounty, which you invite me to share with all. Multiply and magnify these gifts to your work, so that as I give in your name and in your spirit, all your children may be blessed one hundredfold! Amen.

Scripture:                John 17:6-21a, 26

Message:                My Prayer

Pastor Michelle Prentice-Leslie is here today as a representative of the Fox Valley Association of the Illinois Conference, United Church of Christ.

Officers of the church please come forward.

Pastor Michelle Prentice-Leslie: On August 5, 2008, this local church called Rev. Mark S. Gregory to serve as its pastor.

Pastor Mark:  I thank Yorkville Congregational UCC, its members and friends, for the love, kindness, and support shown me these last 12 years. I ask forgiveness for the mistakes I have made. I am grateful for the ways my leadership has been accepted. As I leave, I carry with me all that I have learned here.

People: We receive your thankfulness, offer forgiveness, and accept that you now leave to minister to God’s people in new ways. We express our gratitude for your time among us. We ask your forgiveness for our mistakes. Your influence on our faith and faithfulness will not leave us at your departure.

Pastor Mark:  I forgive you and accept your gratitude, trusting that our time together and our parting are pleasing to God.

Pastor Michelle Prentice-Leslie: (addressing the congregation): Do you, the members and friends of Yorkville Congregational United Church of Christ, release Pastor Mark Gregory

from the duties of Pastor?

People: We do, with the help of God.

Pastor Michelle Prentice-Leslie: Do you offer your encouragement for his ministry as it unfolds in new ways?

People: We do, with the help of God.

Pastor Michelle Prentice-Leslie: Do you, Pastor Mark release this local church from turning to you and depending on you?

Pastor Mark: I do, with the help of God.

Pastor Michelle Prentice-Leslie: Do you offer your encouragement for the continued ministry here and on the relationship with another who will come to serve?

Pastor Mark: I do with the help of God.

Pastor Michelle Prentice-Leslie: On behalf of the Fox Valley Association and the United Church of Christ, I witness to the words spoken words of thankfulness, forgiveness, and release. The member churches of our association and conference hold each of you in prayer. We pledge our support in the transitions Signified in this service.

Officers of Yorkville Congregational Church: Thanks be to God.

Pastor Michelle Prentice-Leslie: Let us pray together the prayer printed in your bulletin.

All:         God, whose everlasting love for all is trustworthy, help each of us to trust the future which rests in your care. The time we were together in your name saw our laughter and tears, our hopes and disappointments. Guide us as we hold these cherished memories but move in new directions, until that time to come when we are completely one with you and with each other, in the name of Jesus Christ we pray.   Amen.

Closing Song :                 God Be With You Till We Meet Again                (On Back of Bulletin)

Pastor Michelle Prentice-Leslie: Go now, surrounded by God’s love and led by the promises of God, the presence of Jesus Christ, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.
