BIO MARINE Aquacultured Gobies

Pictured is a pair of neon gobies, Elacatinus oceanops. The male is inside the tube guarding its eggs, which are close to hatching as indicated by the dark eyespots of the larvae inside the clear eggs. Swimming just above the nest site is the gravid female that can easily be identified by her abdomen swollen with eggs. She will lay her new eggs a day or two after the others have hatched.

The eggs are transferred to a larval rearing tank just prior to hatching. The newly hatched larvae are only about 3 mm in length and must be fed small live zooplankton, such as rotifers or copepod nauplii. As the larvae grow, they must be fed with progressively larger zooplankton until they reach metamorphosis. At that time, they are about 1 cm. The small fish can then be trained to accept small pelleted food.
