Faculty Spotlight: Laura Smith PT, DPT, PhD, Associate Director, Post-Professional Clinical Professional Development, Associate Professor, Physical Therapy Department

“Being nominated for and accepted as a Distinguished Fellow of the National Academies of Practice in Physical Therapy is an immense honor and privilege. It represents a significant recognition from esteemed colleagues and leaders in the field, acknowledging my contributions to the advancement of physical therapy practice, education, and research. This distinction not only validates my professional achievements but also reaffirms my enduring dedication to fostering excellence, innovation, and advocacy within the physical therapy profession”, Smith said.

“I am profoundly grateful for this recognition, as it serves as a powerful motivator to continue striving for excellence in all facets of my work. This distinction inspires me to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and to actively contribute to the ongoing evolution and enhancement of physical therapy practice. I am deeply honored to be a part of the National Academies of Practice and look forward to furthering our collective mission of advancing healthcare and improving patient outcomes.”

When asked about her philosophy of health care, Smith said, “My philosophy of health care centers on the belief that every individual deserves access to high-quality, equitable care that addresses their unique needs and circumstances. I believe in the power of interprofessional collaboration, recognizing that the collective expertise of various healthcare professionals, including physical therapists, can significantly enhance patient outcomes.  I firmly advocate for an integrated, holistic approach to healthcare that goes beyond treating symptoms and addresses the multifaceted dimensions of wellness. This approach acknowledges the interconnectedness of physical, social, emotional, and environmental factors in shaping an individual's health. By embracing this holistic perspective, we can more effectively promote wellness, prevent illness, and support individuals in achieving their fullest potential.”

We also asked Dr. Smith what is most rewarding about educating future PTs, and what she sees as a particular strength of UM-Flint's PT program:

“First and foremost, our students from all three academic programs (transitional-DPT, entry-level DPT, and PhD in PT) are the strength and spirit of our department. Witnessing their growth and development as compassionate, competent professionals dedicated to improving the lives of their patients is one of the most rewarding aspects of being an educator. It is truly gratifying to see them embrace the principles of patient-centered care, critical thinking, and evidence-based practice.”

“Another notable strength of UM-Flint's PT programs lies in our distinguished faculty and our unwavering commitment to interprofessional education (IPE). Our faculty members recognize the paramount importance of collaboration and teamwork in the healthcare field. We actively cultivate an environment where students from diverse disciplines can converge to exchange perspectives and experiences. This approach not only enhances the educational journey but also equips our students with essential skills for effective communication and collaboration with fellow healthcare professionals.”
