The 2025 Institute for Qualitative and Multi-Method Research (IQMR) will be held at the Maxwell School of Syracuse University from June 15 through June 27, 2025. The Institute seeks to enable students to create and critique methodologically sophisticated qualitative research designs, including case studies, tests of necessity or sufficiency, and narrative or interpretive work. It explores the techniques, uses, strengths, and limitations of these methods, while emphasizing their relationships with alternative approaches. Attendees will present and receive constructive feedback on their own research designs.
There are four separate open pool competitions to attend IQMR 2025: the general competition; a competition for researchers at African scholarly institutions; a competition for researchers at Latin American scholarly institutions; and a competition for scholars based in the Arab MENA region. Links to the application form for each competition can be found in the table below.
Scholars admitted through the general competition will have their participation fees, lodging (for the night of June 14, 2025 through the night of June 27, 2025), and breakfast on the 10 days of instruction covered; they will also receive a stipend to contribute toward the cost of other meals. They will be responsible for their own transportation costs to and from Syracuse University.

Materials from the 2024 institute (including a schedule and reading list) are available for viewing on the IQMR website. There is also a brochure, a short slide show, a longer video with some instructors and participants, as well as some module descriptions (and associated short videos). While there will be some changes for 2025, these materials offer a sense of what IQMR participants can expect.

If you have questions regarding IQMR and the general, Africa, or Latin America open pool tracks, please email Sebastian Karcher at skarcher@syr.edu.
Distinct from the open pool process described here, IQMR also accepts attendees who are nominated to attend by their home unit (center/department/school) using their own internal selection procedures. Details, including participation and lodging fees, will be available on the IQMR website in November. If you have any questions about the process of nominating scholars to attend IQMR, please contact Sebastian Karcher at skarcher@syr.edu.
If you know of any scholars who might be interested in attending IQMR 2025, please pass this call for applications on to them.
