Welcome to middle school and Franklin Lower! Moving up to middle school can be intimidating. There’s a new building to learn, new school expectations, and lots of new staff to get to know. This document tries to answer some of the frequently asked questions and wonders of students moving into 7th grade.
Our Mission & Vision The Franklin Lower community will collectively work to empower our students to be leaders and advocates for positive change by: cultivating supportive relationships, honoring our unique identities and strengths, and promoting a sense of accomplishment, curiosity, and joy in learning. |
How do I know my bus? |
Middle school students who live more than 1.5 miles away from the Franklin Campus will ride RTS buses to school. The RTS buses follow express routes that take students directly to school. Information about your child’s RTS bus and bus stop will be mailed by the district the last week of August. |
Do I need a bus pass? |
For the first several days of school, students will use a temporary bus pass emailed by the district with bus information. Within the first several days of school, students will receive their school ID which also serves as their bus pass. |
Why do I need an ID badge? |
Staff and Students should wear their ID badges during the school day. If students lose their ID, they can request a new one from the main office. If they lose more than one, you will need to reach out to transportation to order a new badge. There may be a fee. |
What time does the school day start? |
Our doors open to students at 7:15am. Scanning and breakfast run from 7:15 until 7:35am. At 7:35am students are dismissed to their first period classes which begins at 7:40. |
What can I expect at arrival? |
Upon entrance to the building, students will turn in their cell phones. Student phones are collected and stored in a secure location until the end of the day. They are returned to students in their 8th period class. All students and visitors to the Franklin Campus must go through scanning. Students must take down their hoods, remove face coverings, and remove items from pockets. Items that are unsafe for school will be confiscated. All food and drink should be consumed before entering the school. Open drink containers will be confiscated and thrown away. |
Can I bring food and drink? |
Students may bring unopened beverages in plastic containers and snacks for lunch. However, all food and drink should only be eaten in the cafeteria. Students may have water with them in the classroom. |
Can I bring perfume/cologne? |
Due to asthma and allergies, perfume, cologne, and body sprays are not allowed on campus. If brought through scanning, these items will be held in the main office until the end of the day. However, we encourage students to keep deodorant in their lockers. |
What is the Dress Code? |
Franklin Lower does not have uniforms. We do maintain the expectation that all staff and students are dressed appropriately as outlined in the district’s Code of Conduct. Attire should be safe, appropriate, and not disrupt the education process. If there is a violation of the dress code, students will be asked to cover, remove, or replace the item. The following are not appropriate on school property:
|
Do I get a locker? |
Yes. All students are issued a locker and lock during the first days of school. For safety and security reasons, the sharing of lockers is prohibited and students should not share their locker information. Students must use the school issued lock. If a lock is lost or damaged there is a $5.00 replacement charge. |
What is the school day like? |
Our school day has 8 class periods with several minutes of passing time in between. During passing time, students are expected to move directly to their next period class on their own. It is the student’s responsibility to arrive to class on time and be seated and ready to work at the bell. Classes are 50 minutes long with a 30 minute lunch period. All students should be in their scheduled classrooms during class time. If students need to go to the bathroom, their counselor, or any other location, they need to get a pass from their teacher. Any student in the halls during class time needs to have a pass from an adult. We also run an alternating letter day schedule. Student electives such as Art and Health are scheduled every other day (either on A/C days or B/D days). The letter day is posted in the main office, is updated on morning announcements (available on our Youtube channel), and is reviewed regularly by classroom teachers. All students are dismissed at 2:30pm and typically have 5-7 minutes to get to their buses. |
Who can I reach out to if I have other questions? |
