Course Description: Seventh grade students will continue developing their grammar, vocabulary, spelling, reading, literature, and writing skills through a variety of grade level activities and skill assessments aligned with the 2020 English Language Arts Standards for Wisconsin.

-Students will read, annotate, and analyze several short stories by diverse authors. Students will build their reading comprehension skills, oral fluency, and vocabulary strategies. They will identify literary elements and examine the authors’ use of language.

-Students will analyze Mentor Sentences from well-known Young Adult novels and other texts weekly for style, word choice, and punctuation. They will practice their writing skills through imitating famous authors and close study.

-Students will create a variety of lists of  topics to draw from to write narrative examples.

-Punctuation: Students will practice and apply standard capitalization rules, end punctuation, apostrophes, and parentheses in their writing.

-Students will identify the necessary building blocks of a sentence/clause: Parts of Speech, Subjects, and Predicates.

-Students will incorporate modifiers (adjectives and adverbs) and prepositional phrases in their sentences.

-Students will use a variety of word strategies to acquire new vocabulary and improve spelling such as Greek and Latin roots/affixes, synonyms and antonyms, related words, and by honing dictionary and reference skills (online and print).

-Students will select 3 books each quarter to read independently. They will have  daily class time set aside for them and are expected to read daily outside of class as well. This is a quarter-long HOMEWORK grade. Students will write responses to their reading to demonstrate comprehension and examples of literary elements.

-Students will share book recommendations with peers through weekly discussion, posting notices on our READ bulletin board, and volunteering to read aloud on Fridays.

 Read Alouds will include favorite authors, new popular titles, and iconic YA books each Friday.

-Students will write descriptive paragraphs with a topic sentence, 3-5 supporting detail sentences, a conclusion sentence, and they will edit for grammar, usage, and mechanics.

-Students will identify simple and compound sentences, prepositional phrases, verb phrases, appositive phrases, and dangling modifiers. They will write examples of both sentence structures.

-Students will understand and apply five (5) comma rules in their writing.

-Students will use a variety of strategies to acquire new vocabulary and improve spelling such as Greek and Latin roots/affixes, synonyms and antonyms, related words, and by honing dictionary and reference skills (online and print).

-Students will select 3 books each quarter to read independently. They will have  weekly class time set aside for them and are expected to read daily outside of class as well. -Students will read factual texts about historic events paired with excerpts from historical fiction novels and poems of the same event or historical figure. They will compare and contrast the information from both texts.

-Students will read an historical novel determined by their book group or the large group title I’ve selected:

Prisoner B-3087. The students will complete character studies and vocabulary activities.

-Students will analyze Mentor Sentences from well-known Young Adult novels and other texts weekly for style, word choice, and punctuation. They will practice their writing skills through imitating famous authors and close study.

-Students will write an expository five paragraph essay citing evidence from informational texts. They will edit for grammar, usage, and mechanics.

-Students will identify complex and compound-complex sentences, gerund phrases, and participial phrases. They will write examples of both sentence structures.

-Students will understand and apply  rules for semicolons and ellipses in their writing.

-Students will use a variety of strategies to acquire new vocabulary and improve spelling such as Greek and Latin roots/affixes, synonyms and antonyms, related words, and by honing dictionary and reference skills (online and print).

-Students will select 3 books each quarter to read independently. They will have  weekly class time set aside for them and are expected to read daily outside of class as well. -Students will identify the traits among types of folktales: tall tales, fables, fairytales, myths, and legends. They will learn about the Olympians in Greek Mythology and explore several myths. Students will practice expressive speaking and active listening skills with Readers’ Theater versions of folktales.

-Students will analyze Mentor Sentences from well-known Young Adult novels and other texts weekly for style, word choice, and punctuation. They will practice their writing skills through imitating famous authors and close study.

-Students will write a two (2) page folktale (tall tale, fairytale, legend, fable, or myth) using descriptive words and examples of figurative language. They will write in paragraphs and edit for grammar, usage, and mechanics.

-Students will identify simple and compound sentences, prepositional phrases, verb phrases, appositive phrases, and dangling modifiers. They will write examples of both sentence structures.

-Students will use a variety of word strategies to acquire new vocabulary and improve spelling such as Greek and Latin roots/affixes, synonyms and antonyms, related words, and by honing dictionary and reference skills (online and print).

-Students will practice and apply  standard punctuation and spelling in their writing and assignments.
