K.C.Sahu… (A radical and fundamental Environmentalist)

Born on 1934, at Barpali, Dist. Sambalpur,

Studied Earth Sciences in IIT-Kharagpur during 11954-1960,

Received Ph.D. from Univ. of Sheffield (UK) in 1963.

 Worked as a Geologist in Orissa Mining Corporation during 1957-1964,

               As a Scientist in R.R.L., Bhubaneswar during 1964-1967,

               As  Professor and Head Earth Sc.Dept.,IIT-Bombay during 1967-94

               On retirement (1994) joined as Vice President of New India Mining Corps. Then

                As Consultant to Ashapura Mine Chem. Ltd.

He is a Fellow of:

                                Geological Society of India

                                 Mineralogical Society of India.

                                 Mining, Geological and Metallurgical Inst.

                                  Indian Geological Congress.

                                  Society of Geologist and Allied Technologist, Bhubaneswar.

                                  Indian Aerosol Science and Technology Association, B.A.R.C.

                                  Society of Clean Environment, Bombay,

                                   Maharastra Academy of Science.

He specialized in Geochemistry and applied geochemical principles to Environmental problems such as: Heavy Metal Pollution of Air, Water, Soil, Sediments and Biota in many “Hot Spots” of India, like:

                 Cities. -  Mumbai, Delhi and Rourkela.

                 Mines. – Sukinda, Zawar and Khetri.

                  Rivers. – SubernaRekha, Bramhani, Rushikulya, Ulhas (Bombay), Tiri.

                  Thermal Plants and Ash Ponds – Talchir, Korba, Neiveli, Raamagundam,

                                                                        Kothagudem and Nasik.

He was Member of:

                    Research Advisory Committee of Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology.

                     Executive Council of Ambedkar Technology University.

                     Geology Expert Committees of UGC and UPSC.

                      Advisor to UPSC for Civil services.

He has produced 16 Ph.Ds, conducted several National and International projects and published more than 100 papers all related to Environmental issue.

Presently spends time in communication of environmental issues to various groups and at various levels by way of technical/popular talks.
