Unit 8 - Recruitment and Selection Process

Business Core Course (1 A Level equivalent)

Students will cover a range of components that will deepen their understanding of how businesses operate with particular focus on organisation, decision making, financial considerations and marketing. They will study the following units:

Unit 1 - Exploring Business

Unit 8 - Recruitment and Selection Process

Business Diploma (2 A Level Equivalent)

For some students, they will develop their understanding of businesses on a global scale and what strategies businesses need to operate internationally with an increased focus on leadership, management and decision making and how they impact on business success. This will include the importance of recruitment and selection of appropriate staff. They will study 4 further units:

What are we building?

Some students will have prior knowledge having undertaken a similar unit in BTEC Level 2 Business. Those who have not studied that course may have some experience through involvement with Work Experience programmes or knowledge gained through family and friends.

I will need to complete two tasks in total. Recruitment and Selection theory and application in a real world situation - Case Study. (Unit 8 Task 1)

What are we teaching?

Week 1 - Unit Introduction; What is Recruitment and Selection? Definitions and examples. Why Do Businesses recruit? What factors influence the need for recruitment?

Week 2 - The 4 stages of recruitment and selection. What do businesses need to consider when recruiting? Job analysis and defining the role; advertising; application;and selection methods.  Portfolio 1 - Logic is expanding!

Week 3 - Describing Job Roles - Job Descriptions and Person Specifications; what do they involve? What are they used for? What should they contain?

Week 4 - Internal Vs External Recruitment - types of recruitment; what are the advantages of disadvantages of both? What is the suitability for different roles?

Week 5 - Advertising - different types of advert designs and requirements; what are the different advertising methods used; What are effective and why? Why are some more suitable for different roles?

Week 6 - Applications - What are the different methods used when applying for a job? What are the advantages and disadvantages of these methods? How has technology impacted on the R&S process?  

Week 7 - Selection Methods - What are the different methods that can be used by companies to select staff? What are the most suitable methods and why?

Week 8 - Laws in Recruitment - What are they key laws that businesses must comply with when recruiting new staff? Why are these in place? What are the consequences for noncompliance? Portfolio piece - Recruitment Laws.

Week 9 - Ethics in Recruitment - What is ethical recruitment? What examples are relative for businesses in recruitment? What are the consequences for non ethical recruitment?

Week 10 and Week 11 - Task 1 Launch - P1 P2 Focus - What do i need to include for Task 1? How can In plan my work effectively? Where will I find research to support this?

Week 12 - Task 1 - Case Study M1 Focus - How does an identified company conduct the Recruitment and Selection process? How to use evidence to support your writing? PEE?

Week 13 - Task 1 - Case Study D1 Focus with GST - How successful has your identified company been in the R&S process? How to use GST to plan your D task?

Week 14 - Task 1 write up and Completion - Task 1 Submission

What are we building on?

Students will have undertaken and completed a theoretical task which examines Recruitment and Selection, with particular reference to the methods and success of one company as part of a case study. (Task 1)

Implementation

What are we teaching?

Week 15  - Task 2 Introduction and Launch; Setting up your own company and identifying a role to advertise. Review work from Week 5. Task Portfolio -  create a job advert for the identified role in your company.

Week 16 - Job Documents - Task Portfolio: What are the job documents required for your advertised role. Review work from Week 3. Research and create these for the identified role in your company.

Week 17 - Applying for a role within a company. Review work from Week 6. Task Portfolio: create the required application documents for a role in another company.

Week 18 - Reviewing the documents:  for a job role and for an  application for a job role. - Portfolio 3 - (P3 Portfolio)

Week 19 - Interview Preparation (and participation in the Interview process (P4 M2). What is good / bad practice in an interview situation? What questions would you ask when interviewing someone for a role? How would you answer questions when being interviewed?

Week 20 - Review your performance in the interview (P5 P6) based on reviews completed by yourself and your employer. . What were your strengths and weaknesses as an interviewer? What were your strengths and weaknesses as a candidate? Identify key areas for improvement in both situations? Use this key vocabulary (from review templates) in your writing.

Week 21 - Review your performance throughout the Unit. (M2 D2 D3)  How to use GST effectively to plan your work? How to use evidence from your portfolio to support your writing?

Week 22 - Complete portfolio and submit task. (Task 2 Submission)

Week 23+ - Complete portfolio and submit task. (if required).

What comes next?

Having completed Unit 8, students will not undertake Unit 27 (if studying for the diploma).
