Transfer Out/SEVIS Transfer Checklist:
As you transfer out of PSU, it may feel like there are many moving pieces to keep in mind! We hope that this checklist will help guide you as you prepare to transition out of PSU and to continue your academic journey at your next university!
Immigration:
- As an international student, you are required to begin classes at your new school at the next available term or within five months, whichever is sooner, unless you are taking an authorized break or vacation.
- Be in contact with your new school. At the bare minimum, you must contact the new DSO at your school within 15 days of the program start date and register for classes.
Finances:
- Tuition and Fees: If you need to drop classes after the add/drop deadline, you may need to file a Deadline Appeal in order to request a refund for any tuition that was charged.
- Student Health insurance (SHAC): Refunds for health insurance are only available if you transfer and drop your classes within the first 2 weeks of the term. Contact insurancehelp@pdx.edu for more information.
- Housing/Rent: If you have signed a lease, you may need to pay an additional fee to “break” your lease ahead of your original move out date. Contact your housing/leasing office for more details.
- Scholarships: PSU scholarships may not be available if you transfer out of PSU and then transfer back later. It’s important to check the eligibility before you transfer.
On-Campus Employment:
- Let your supervisor know of your intention to transfer out and to stop working at least 2 weeks ahead in order to give them the opportunity to prepare for your departure.
- Make sure Human Resources (HR) has updated contact information in order to send tax forms to you after you move. You will also be able to access your tax forms on Banweb, starting in late January.
- Once your SEVIS transfer has been completed, you are no longer authorized to work on campus at PSU.
Address Updates:
- Mail: Make sure that you update your mailing address with the US Postal Service.
- Banking: Make sure that your billing address is updated for your credit/debit cards.
- Driver’s license: If you are moving to a different state, you will need to visit the local DMV/DPS to request a new license from that state.
ODIN Access:
- Your access to your ODIN account and PSU email will last for one year after your last term of attendance. After that point, your main account will be disabled. After 1.5 years, most data from your account will be deleted, including your emails.
- If you have been using your PSU email account as your primary email, make sure to update your contacts what your replacement email address will be.
- You will still be able to have limited access to MyPSU for certain functions (e.g. requesting transcripts) after this point. For more information, contact the Office of Information Technology.
Transcripts:
- Your new school may require copies of your transcripts in order to determine whether your credits at PSU will transfer. You can request both unofficial and official transcripts through myPSU (click Academics -> Academic Records -> Order Official Transcript)
Students on OPT:
- Transferring your SEVIS record ends your approved period of OPT.
- If you transferred your I-20 before the end of your authorized period of OPT, you must stop work on the date of your SEVIS transfer. You may not be authorized for off-campus employment again until your first term of study at your new school.
Students in the IELP:
- You must inform the IELP of your plans to transfer. You may email ESL@pdx.edu or call them at 503-725-4088 to let them know about your plans to transfer.
Sponsored Students:
- Contact Sponsor: Communicate with your government sponsor (Ministry of Higher Education / Embassy) about your plan to transfer universities and follow any required procedures.
- Documentation: You may need to provide necessary documentation to your sponsor to approve the transfer.
- Financial Guarantee: Make sure you are aware of the process to update or provide a new financial guarantee if required by the new university.
- Health Insurance: Check if your current health insurance coverage is still valid or if you need to make adjustments based on the new university’s requirements.
Thank you for being a part of our PSU family! We wish you the best as you begin your studies at your new school!
