A Moment of BAN

“Can we all say: Haleluya?”

“Haleluya.”

“Amen!”

(- In Jerusalem this week)

In the Beginning

“This entire [Shavuot] festival had been celebrated in heaven from the time of creation until the lifetime of Noah—for 26 jubilees and five weeks of years [=1309]. Then Noah and his sons kept it for seven jubilees and one week of years until Noah’s death [=350 years]. From the day of Noah’s death his sons corrupted (it) until Abraham’s lifetime and were eating blood. 6:19 Abraham alone kept (it), and his sons Isaac and Jacob kept it until your lifetime. During your lifetime the Israelites had forgotten (it) until I renewed (it) for them at this mountain.” (Book of Jubilees 6:18)

Daf Bite  –

Zevahim 33a-b: The Entrance to the Courtyard

One of the activities that were incumbent on the person who brought a sacrifice was semikha – laying hands on the animal that was to be sacrificed before its slaughter. The Gemara on today’s daf quotes a tosefta that teaches that tekef le-semikha, sheḥita – that this laying of hands was performed immediately prior to the slaughter of the animal. One exception was the case of a metzora – someone who had recovered from biblical leprosy and was obligated to bring a number of sacrifices to formally put an end to his ordeal. Since his status as someone who was ritually impure did not allow him to enter the Temple courtyard where the slaughter took place, he would perform it in sha’ar Nicanor – the Nicanor gate – at the entrance to the courtyard.

Sha’ar Nicanor served as the main entrance to the Temple courtyard from the outer precincts of the Temple Mount, at the top of a series of steps leading from the ezrat nashim. As our Gemara explains, one of its purposes was to allow someone who needed access to the Temple courtyard to get as close as possible without actually entering it.  (steinsaltz.org)

Rav Question -

Torah resembles to Honey and Milk as it’s written: “Dvash v’halav tahat leshonekha - honey and milk under your tongue.”

Can we be yotse with honey only? Can the milk be “helev hita” as in Deuteronomy 32:14 in which “milk” is of wheat?!

On the Parasha & Beyond…

Ktav Parasha - Bəmidbar

Parashat Bamidbar - "And the L-d spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai..."

The voice of Torah rises from the desert. If the voice of the Torah would have risen from the place of human habitation, it would have become the sole domain of one tribe or one nation. But in the desert, among the sands, in the no-man's land that belongs to no one and not to the public, a divine moral doctrine has been created, which must be an asset of all humanity.

Let us merit true unity and truly acceptance of the Torah by all the world’s nations.

Shabbat shel Shalom and Shavuot Sameyah!

Parasha: Bəmidbar - Bəmidbar (Numbers) 1:1-4:20

Historical Context: Bnei Israel's 40-year journey continues. Midbar Sinai (Sinai Desert) at Ohel Moed (Tent of Meeting). Creation Time: 2449 (1475 bce) on the first day of the second month, in the second year after the departure from Mitsrayim.

Parashort: In the Sinai Desert G-d says to conduct a census of the twelve tribes of Israel. Moshe counts 603,550 men of  age 20 to 60 years; the tribe of Levi, numbering 22,300 males age one month and older, is counted separately. Beyond the Levite circle, the twelve tribes camped in four groups of three tribes each. This formation was kept also while traveling. Each tribe had its own Nassi (leader), and its own flag with its tribal color and emblem.

Haftara: Bəmidbar - Hoshea (Hosea) 2:1-22

Haftit: The Prophet Hosea predicts that in the future Messianic period, the Jewish people will enjoy Hashem’s blessing of growth, unity, and redemption. The Haftara begins with a promise that there will be so many Israelites that you won’t be able to count them. A gathering of the exiles will occur. The Haftarah ends with the promise that Hashem will take Israel for himself in love, righteousness and faith for all time.

Connection to the Parasha: In the Haftarah, the prophet Hosea predicts that the population of Israel will grow like the sands of the ocean. In the Parsha, torah reading, we hear about the many Jews that traveled in the Sinai Desert to the Holy Land. So the connection is that both Haftarah’s and Parsha’s usage of the word sand, and it’s being uncountable. (haftorahman.com)

A Story: of far away

The servant of one of the big merchants of Istanbul went one evening in the street, and suddenly he saw the angel of death standing before him, waving at him with his death scythe.

The servant was horrified, ran to his master, told him what he had seen, and asked him for his fastest horses, so that he could escape from the Angel of Death, as far away as possible.

The servant galloped all night very quickly, and at dawn came to the distant city of Ankara.

In the morning, the merchant himself went to the market to confront the Angel of Death. "Why did you come to Istanbul surprise and terrorize the best of my servants?"

"The opposite is true," answered the Angel of Death. "I am the one who was surprised to see your servant in the streets

Istanbul. I even waved at him with my hands, and I asked him how come he was in Istanbul when in my diary it says that I have a meeting with him tomorrow morning in the far away Ankara."

Sivan: The First 6 Days

The nineteenth chapter of the book of Exodus describes this final week of preparation for the revelation at Sinai. Analyzing the Torah’s account, the Talmud (Shabbat 86b–88a) pieces together the following chronicle of events for these six days:

1 Sivan: Moses did not say anything at all to the Jewish people, since they were weary from the journey.

2 Sivan: At dawn, Moses ascends Mount Sinai. He brings back the following message from G‑d: “You shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation” (Exodus 19:6). The day is accordingly marked in our calendar as Yom HaMəyukhas, “The Day of Designation.”

3 Sivan: G‑d commands Moses to fence in Mount Sinai, marking the boundaries where everyone is to stand when G‑d reveals Himself upon the mountain and gives them the Torah. The kohanim (priests) may approach closer than the rest of the people, Aaron may approach closer than the kohanim, while Moses alone will be summoned by G‑d to ascend. (Ibid., vv. 12, 22, 24)

4 Sivan: The Jewish people are instructed to purify and sanctify themselves in preparation for the giving of the Torah, by suspending marital relations and immersing in water. (Ibid., v. 14)

5 Sivan: Moses builds an altar at the foot of the mountain and seals the covenant between G‑d and Israel. The entire people proclaim, “All that G‑d commands, we shall do and we shall hear (comprehend).” (Ibid. 24:4–8)

6 Sivan: The Giving of the Torah. “When morning came, there was thunder and lightning, and a thick cloud upon the mountain... The voice of the shofar sounded, growing stronger and stronger... G‑d descended upon Mount Sinai... and spoke the following words, saying: “I am the L‑d your G‑d who took you out of the land of Egypt . . .” (Ibid. 19:16–20:2). (chabad.org +)
