3D Printer and 3D CAD Workshop in Bellingham, March 14-17

Hello,

My name is Jeremy Drost, and I am a local member of Open Source Ecology.  We are a non-profit dedicated to creating open source hardware through education and collaboration.  I am hosting a 3D Printer Build and Online Collaboration Workshop in Bellingham March 14 to 17.  https://www.opensourceecology.org/steam-camp-march-2020/  During the workshop all participants will have the chance to assemble a 3D printer from scratch, which they take home!  We also teach the basics of 3D CAD, some machine programming and how to operate the printer.  We recently added a "weekend only" option to allow students access to this learning opportunity without impacting school days.  There is not cost to attend the workshop, but there is a fee paid ahead of time to cover the costs of all the materials and shipping.  We encourage those who are building a printer to invite a friend or two to participate and engage in the learning.

I wanted to make you aware of this event as it is an excellent introduction STEM skills and practices for any students considering further education or work in these fields.  We have room for about 20 participants.   We also encourage all the participants to bring a friend to participate in the build and all the training at no additional cost.

Please let any students whom might be interested know about this event.  If you have any questions, they can be directed to me (jeremy@benchmark-creative.com) or to info@opensourceecology.org.

I also attached a flyer that may be useful.

Finally, we are still looking to secure a venue in which to host the workshop.  If any of your schools would be interested in hosting, we would greatly appreciate the support!

Thanks so much for your time and assistance,

Hello Jeff and Jessica,

My name is Jeremy Drost, I graduated from WWU in 2010, and am a local member of Open Source Ecology.

I wanted to make you aware of this event and hopefully enlist your help in securing a venue.  The events coordinator at the Bellingham Public Library indicated the school district may allow events like this to take place on campus, or might be renting out space?  Either way, I thought you might want to know about the event and the organization.

Hey NAME

I wanted to followup and enlist your help spreading the word to any of your colleagues or students that might be interested!

I've managed to partner with Marcin Jakubowski, Founder of Open Source Ecology (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S63Cy64p2lQ), to host one of his Open Source Microfactory STEAM Camps. The camp is a 4-day event where Marcin teaches you how to create your own Open Source Microfactory.  Marcin will be leading a team in New Zealand and collaborating with 3 other teams across the US.

During this epic 4 day event you will learn!!!

Day 1: Build a 3D Printer

- How to build your own 3D printer from scratch (TheD3D Universal Printer).

Day 2: CAD and Printing

- You will learn to design and 3D CAD a new CNC plotting tool attachment and then print it out on the 3D printer you built on Day 1.

Day 3: Electronics

- Use the CNC Plotter you created on Day 2 to create a circuit board, then create your own microcontroller from scratch and program it (like an Arduino Uno).

Day 4 - Tablet Project:

- We work as a global team to collaborate on designing and prototyping a Raspberry Pi touch screen tablet (PiFabricatedTablet - PiFablet) using all the skills developed over the previous 3 days.  We will build and iterate on work done in previous camps.

Pretty awesome stuff!

When:

March 14-17 - 9am to 7pm

Registration closes March 9.

Thanks for offering to help out with this!  I am looking for space to host a 4 day technology education and development workshop as part of Open Source Ecology's Workshop Program.

The next event is planned for March 14 - 17, and the days may flex slightly as we will be conducting simultaneous camps around the globe, and our team in New Zealand (being a day ahead of everyone else) might change the dates to 13 - 16.

The Camp in a Nutshell:

We teach the participants how to  build their own 3D Printer from scratch.  They keep the printer when done, and since they built it from the ground up, they will have a great understanding of how it works and can keep it running smoothly for a long time.  Additional skills that are taught, include the basics of 3D CAD (computer aided design), basic electronics, and basics of machine programming as it relates to the printer.  Students will also get a primer on Open Source Hardware development and those interested can learn some additional skills that will allow them to contribute to a global project whose goal is to drastically reduce the cost of basically everything.  They can then use the printer they made to participate in rapid prototyping and development across a myriad of Open Hardware Projects.

We are hopeful of getting 6 to 12 people to attend.  We need about 80 - 100 sq per participant as they will each need a decent size work area.  A somewhat unfinished space is preferred to make sweeping up afterwards easy.

As this is an Open Source Non Profit endeavor, I am hoping to find a space that is available for the dates, and at very minimal to zero cost.

Thanks so much for your help.  I really hope we can find something downtown as it will be so convenient!

Got Your Message, need more information:

Hello,

I got your voicemail and am glad you emailed as well!  I would love to come out the Friday Harbor for a workshop.  Here is a basic list of our planned upcoming events, if the timing of one of these lines up for you, that would be great as we can collaborate with other teams.  https://wiki.opensourceecology.org/wiki/STEAM_Camp_Schedule  If none of these dates work, we can setup something independently around the schedule that works for you.

Our next planned workshop has a 2 or 4 day option.  Details here: https://www.opensourceecology.org/steam-camp-march-2020/.  These are typically 8 to 10 hour days, so depending on the amount of time available, we can mix and match the curriculum to fit your schedule, desired learning outcomes or student interests.  All the workshops start with the D3D-Universal printer build, and then leverage the printer in combination with FreeCAD to add functionality to the printer, or create another project. We usually take a day and do a side project focused on electronics (i.e. build an Arduino Uno from scratch using the D3D to etch and mill the circuit board), and then learn some basic programming on the Arduino.  Here is a link to the previous 9 day event in January https://www.opensourceecology.org/steam-camp-january-2020/

If you haven't watched Marcin's TED Talk, I think it is 4 minutes well spent: https://www.ted.com/tal organismsks/marcin_jakubowski_open_sourced_blueprints_for_civilization?language=en

Looking forward to continuing this discussion!  Let me know what other questions you have, and when you would like to schedule a call to discuss further.

Thanks,
