Sub: School Safety Capacity Building Programme
for Handicap School
1. BACK GROUND:
In last few years India has faced many Man made and Natural Disaster. School students are most vulnerable to any disaster. Past history of the Fire accident on 16th July 2004, 93 children were charred to death and 30 severely injured when fire broke out in a private school in Kumbakonam town of Thanjavur district of Tamilnadu State. Cause was fire in the Kitchen and due to lack of awareness; Impact was Stampede, Shock, Suffocation injury. This are the matter of serious concern involved with the administration of schools. 26th January 2001 Kutch Earthquake many school children died. Recent earthquake in china many school collapsed. To avoid recurrence of such fire accident or to avoid collapse of school due to earthquake and to minimize the effect of Disaster, loss of human asset School Management should have School Disaster Management Plan (SDMP) for their school for student’s safety
District Social Welfare Department of GoM, who looks after the handicap school in Mumbai city. Under this department 25 private school for approximate _____ students is located in suburban of Mumbai city and 18 school for approximate 1000 students is run by Education department of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai.
NEED of TRAINING:
School students are more vulnerable for disaster. During normal period Handicap students require special methods of teaching & they take lots of time to learn as per their disabilities. These students are more sensitive to strange situation and people and can react very adversely with unknown people in unknown situation. Motto for this project is to strengthen this school for Disaster Management by School Safety project and prepare school management and students to reduce the impact of any disaster on them and to reduce the psychological impact of disaster so they take less time to come back to normal life.

The School Safety Capacity Building Programme is design for Handicap School Management to make school safe, train teachers and assist students with Disabilities like physical, visual, auditory, or cognitive disabilities to prepare them for disasters and their consequences.
