In accordance with health & safety legislation (Health & Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981) it is the responsibility of the Governing Body to ensure that there is timely and competent administration of adequate and appropriate First Aid provision for staff and pupils, on site and during off-site visits and activities.
Parents/Carers have primary responsibility for their child’s health, and parents should provide full information to the School about any pupil’s medical conditions, including the prescription and use of medication or medical equipment, so that the School can ensure the best possible care. All information will be processed lawfully and fairly in accordance with the Data Protection Act 2018.
Definition of First Aid First Aid is the assistance given to any person suffering a sudden illness or injury, with care provided to preserve life, prevent the condition from worsening and/or promote recovery. It includes initial intervention in a serious condition prior to professional medical help being available, such as performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) whilst awaiting a paramedic/ambulance, as well as the complete treatment of minor conditions such as applying a dressing to a cut.
First Aid does not include the giving of any tablets or medicines unless explicit written consent from parents/carers has been received and is noted on the School’s records.
In order to ensure appropriate First Aid provision, the School will ensure that: - There are sufficient numbers of personnel appropriately trained in all aspects of First Aid including Emergency First Aid, First Aid at Work, Paediatric First Aid, Outdoor First Aid and Sport First Aid. Training will be regularly updated in line with respective Government guidelines and Independent School regulations, consistent with School procedures;
- A qualified and competent First Aider will be available when the School campus is open (either by nominated supervision staff between 7.30am-6pm when pupils are on site during term-time, or by a Designated Caretaker out of normal school hours);
- First Aid arrangements are made whenever staff and pupils are engaged in off-site activities and visits;
- Appropriate equipment will be available to ensure competent personnel can respond rapidly to an incident at all times when the School is occupied, with kits available to take on off-site visits and trips;
- First Aid Health and Medical Care of Pupils Procedures are in place which include guidance on dealing with medical emergencies and major accidents;
- Provision of adequate First Aid room(s) or suitable areas for First Aid treatment are made available in accordance with the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) regulations;
- First Aid cover is provided for sporting activities during the School day and at weekends during term time, and for activities which form part of the School curriculum during the evenings;
- The School’s First Aid provision will have due regard to the needs of pupils with particular medical conditions (such as allergies, asthma, epilepsy, diabetes), where necessary discussing requirements with parents/carers. Medication will be securely stored as appropriate;
- An assessment of First Aid needs is carried out that is appropriate to the requirements of our pupils, at every stage of School;
- A record of First Aid treatment and a summary report will be provided to Governors as necessary, to ensure that the School complies with the requirements of the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 (RIDDOR).
