Still Life Drawing with Highlight
For this assignment you will be practicing your OBSERVATIONAL SKILLS, and developing your drawing skills using CONTOUR drawing and adding VALUE to create 3 Dimension.
- Make a selection of objects (5 minimum) and set up a still life in the center of your table. Try to make the composition varied and interesting by using a variety of sizes and textured objects.
- Take a photo of the still life. (You’ll never be able to set it up the same way in the next class) HINT: you can make it black and white to help with seeing value.
- Then using observation (look back and forth between the objects/image and your paper) draw a detailed CONTOUR DRAWING of that still life. Only lines, but all lines, even folds in fabric and veins in leaves.
- Then draw a circle (Trace a palette) somewhere on the image. Within that circle observe the VALUES that exist and try to reproduce them. Pay careful attention to the highlights, shadows and midtones on the objects.
