Message for Students and Parents from Mr. Skinner

This morning Mr. Skinner and his daughters recorded a message for the school community in their PJs, inside an igloo fort. You can find the message here: https://twitter.com/MrSkinnerocsb/status/1244614597472071685

As mentioned in the video, we would like to do some spirit days over the next week or two weeks. Today was PJ Day and Tuesday, March 31st will be Crazy Hair/Hat Day. Students are encouraged to submit ideas for other spirit days by replying with their parents to this email. I will send out other spirit day themes later in the week and encourage everyone to celebrate these days and dress up at home.

Also, students are welcome to continue to send emails to Mr. Skinner and his daughters via the school email account and they will do their best to respond to you within 24 hours.

School Closure

The Ottawa Catholic School Board expects an official announcement early this week from the Ministry of Education regarding the extension of school closures. We are preparing for the continuation of learning for our students, knowing that circumstances are different for each individual. Last week and this week, our staff will be reaching out to students to ensure that they can best support their learning needs.

On Monday, March 23rd, the Premier indicated all Ontario schools might be closed longer than initially anticipated. While we wait for further direction on when schools will reopen, we are implementing strategies to help our students learn in meaningful and innovative ways.

At Home Learning Resources

In addition to the resources that were shared in Mr. Skinner’s email this morning, the OCSB has provided a curated collection of educational resources for students to supplement the Ministry of Education’s Learn at home website. Many thanks to OCSB central staff who curated these supplementary resources to support #ocsbAtHome learning. See #ocsbAtHome Learning Resources. As always our educators will continue to use their professional judgment to guide parents and students to the resources they feel are best suited to their class, grade, or course.

Items or Devices Left at School

At this time, we are under a state of emergency and the school remains closed. Only those deemed essential services should be leaving their homes. While students may wish to retrieve personal belongings from the school, everyone is doing their part to slow down COVID-19 by staying home at this time.

EDP and Food Programs

Families will not be charged for EDP when schools are closed. For some families, the OCSB was not able to stop the payments from coming through from your bank. If that is the case, you will be reimbursed.

Work is being done now to ensure April 15 payments reflect automatic refunds for the following:

March 5 – 4th strike day – if your child was registered for Thursdays

March 16 – 20 – if your child was registered for March Break

March 23 – April 3 – for the days your child is registered for.

Staff from the OCSB Finance department are looking into how and when to provide refunds for food programs. We should have more information about this process in the coming days.

Chromebooks for At Home Learning

Some parents have been asking about possible opportunities to use school Chromebooks to access at home learning resources. Until we can access the school safely, we are not yet in a position to distribute existing devices to students. We are working on a distribution plan so that devices can be redistributed to students who are not able to access online learning resources, once we get approval from Ottawa Public Health. This will take place in the coming weeks. Mr. Skinner will keep you posted on the timelines and processes involved.
